could be thermostat or it could be just the pressure cap that has gone but you usaly loss water that way did water leak out of cap when the engine was turned off

how bad did it overheat.

be very careful as head gaskets go very easily when you overheat.

Could be radcap, how much water have you lots, and have you bled your system?

The car has been bled and there is no water loss I think it is the thermostat not open fully so water not going round the system I think I well change it next weekend and see how that is.

wish me luck

Jay, your overheating description sounds like the viscous coupling may of failed and is not turning the fan blade sufficiently quick enough, to test this get the engine warm (bonnet closed) once up to temp lift the bonnet and whilst viewing the fan blade switch of the engine, if the fan continues to spin after switch off for more than a second or two it will need replacing as it is slipping to much and hence will cause overheating by virtue of not sufficient air been drawn through the rad when at slow speeds or stationary.

This is very typical and have changed 4 of these units in the last 6 weeks for the same reason and effected a complete cure each time.
