Having got the other halfs daughter a car for passing her test, the hard part comes to insuring her. Some of the prices ive been quoted are over £1500, its a Mazda 323f 1996, so 1.5 engine, cheap to tax and run, she is 22 and passed her test last month. Only £200 for me on my

own, but that doesnt help lol.

I tried to get quotes with me being the named driver and adding her as an additional driver, but still comes in at £1400 as i cant use my own NCB, not transferable to another vehicle while im using it on mine. Even if i could it comes in at over £700

Tried her on her own and getting similar prices, absolutely crazy. In some instances, me insuring it in my name and her being the main driver apparently is called fronting and will not be legal.:glare:

Its no wonder young drivers sometimes dont bother being insured, the fine is less

So who has had a similar problem and any easier route to take? Look forward to advice.

Cheers

Graham

Can't think of anything to help out bud but I do agree that the price of insurance for newly passed drivers is astronomical. I understand that they are considered a bigger risk than us older ones but the car she's got is hardly a drag monster or typical chav mobile. They do seem to be cracking down on the parents that do fronting. Must be very frustrating for you both.

One thing; Are you trying to get TPFT or fully comp? Reason I ask is that fully comp is often cheaper these days than TPFT.

I tried both Dave, even offering a higher voluntary excess, but they wont allow too high an excess because it will outweigh the price of the car.

What about a different car, say a 1.1 Saxo, my daughter 24 is insured to drive ours as a named driver with me being the policyholder but I did have some no claims to use and it as always been about £500 a year, initially with directline but now we are with LV. Tried to get her to go alone but it was just too much!!

Just passed her test will also not be helping matters, suggest you use your no claims Graham from the Z, you will find it won't make much difference to it, it's what being a parent is all about bud .

Similar thing with my son, he has a V6 Frontera, paying £800 for last year, just got renewal with LV and it's come down to £500, he's happy as Larry with that.

Expect to take off her £70 or £80 a month but not £1400 a year

It really does not matter. You can kill someone driving a 323F the same you can kill someone driving a G-Wiz. New drivers are more risky and should be paying more for their insurance - otherwise what is the point of NCB? Or age? Or expierience?

However there are insurance companies out there that will fit a tracker and give her a curfew which may reduce the premium slightly.

i know its not the way to do ... but go to vaxhul/citreon & others and buy a Brand new 6k car that comes with 2 years free insurance

this way when it comes to the 3 year the Premiums have dropped a lot

it doesnt matter what car she wants to insure now its going to be 1500>3000 all so they just done this No discrimination policy

Getting another car isnt an option at the moment really as we got the Mazda in may and just got it through the MOT and i bought another for spares.

Its a shame she doesnt have the money to pay in one lump as paying monthly hikes up the overall cost.

Yeah the interest on monthly instalments is horrendous with some companies, one of the cheaper quotes I got actually charged 30% so it was cheaper at the end of the year to pay a higher premium with lower interest

Can you get a credit card with 0% on purchases and bung it on that. Pay it off over a year?

Excellent idea Roobard, M&S are doing one for 18 months or so interest free atm

Get a policy in her name and add you as the named driver...

I had a chat with my insruance company about this recently, basically if you get the policy in your name with her as a named driver, it looks like you are acting as a "buffer" for her (cant think of a better word), so they the premiums go up on purpose.

However, if the policy is in her name rather than yours, it looks like you're making an effort to try and get her own policy rather than naming her to try and save money, so they actually come out with a much lower premium.

I've explained this really badly but it works :)

I know what you mean bud, its called fronting, sorted a company now, in her name, still £1200 but after a year it will go down by nearly £400 and she gets a chance to build her own NC. I found a company called Premium choice, specifically designed for young lady and young drivers in general.

I tried a multicar policy combining my NC, but still a horrendous price, especially as i only £37 a month.

trouble is even if the mazda is a higher group if you get a fiesta or saxo etc etc you will most likely pay the same if not more due to the statistics. moronic little boys drive those cars there boy racer cars so they are more expensive to insure.

believe or not my capri used to cost me less than most of my friends little hatches, and my zed was less expensive to insure than my daily driver 1.2 corsa.

Try INSURETHEBOX, I fit loads of the black boxes for them and the people say that they saved a fortune. They only insure fully comp but have 6000 or 8000 mile limits although you can top up the miles if needed

We are fitting 10,000 boxes per month for them and its not just new drivers, you also get the added bonus of being able to track the car yourself if its stolen or if you were wanting to find out we're your kids are or have been
