And is it not recomended to install a sender unit withouth having the original on too?

Doesn't REALLY matter I suppose... The best place to tap into is the oil filter braket - there are a couple of bolts that can be removed and replaced with an OP sender unit wink.gif

So you can put a sender unit on where the US sender unit is? Ontop of the oilfilter bracket?

Will that be easier to do?

Stuart

Not necessarily easier Stu but you'll keep the stock setup too wink.gif I think the oil filter braket may have a 8mm bolt in so you may need an adaptor from m8 to 1/8npt or something...

You know where I can get a bracket?

Right the screw on the oilfilter thing is perfect but there is not enough room to get the new sender unit in.

So I am trying to take off the stock one, but having great difficulty. There isnt enough room to move the spanner.

I have turned it about 1/8 of a turn but the there isnt enough room to take the spanner off and put it back on again.

Any ideas?

Stuart

Erm, how tight is the sender? You could try twisting the sender unit itself - if you aint using it again then it don't matter if you break it wink.gif

Speak to Europa Spares (www.europaspares.com) who sell loads of adaptors and unions.

Or alternatively go to www.autometer.com for one of their weld in adaptors. (http://www.autometer.com/hp/index.html - product search/Cups,Tubing&Accessories/ gauge accessories/weld in adaptor part number 2261)

Right new sender on, wiring on, but I have to give it ignition power. I have done the light, I connected that up to the light on the Cig lighter.

Can I wire up the power to the Cig lighter?

If so which cables? There is an orange and black wire. Is that an ignition one?

Looks like it should be the blue wire next to the green/red going into the 10pin connector going to the stereo. This should be a nice strong supply wink.gif Dunno why they use L for blue though on the wiring diagrams - always baffles me that LOL

In the end I connected it to the cig lighter igniton power. Will this be too much?

I have connected it but now the needle goes striaght to the top as soon as the ignition is on. frown.gif

Whats wrong. The wire going to the unit is fine cos I tested it.

Stuart

Is that not just the meter testing itself??? What happens if you start the engine? Is the earth solid? Does the ignition line deffinitely go to +12v when you turn the key? Does it have a good permanent positive feed (+12v)? Just a few questions/tests wink.gif

Yes 12v from the power when you turn to key, and 0 when its turned off, earth is good - connected it to the lights earth also tried connecting it to battery earth with the same result. Continuity through the signal wire is good too. Very strange.

Cant see why the power isnt consistent, put one of those volt thingys on it and it didnt move even.

Even tried connecting the new sender unit to old wireing so it sould move the stock unit. But it didnt.

Stuart

Stuart,

Is the wire from the sender a single or double core? If it is a single it will use the car chassis for the earth. Measure the resistance between the signal wires/signal wire and earth. What is the reading? You may be better off taking an earth from the chassis of the car - just find an existing earth attached by a bolt through a ring terminal and splice into that.

Does the guage not require a permanent live feed too???

Hi Andy,

What you mean double core? The sender terminal for the wire has plastic base to keep it seporate from the rest of the sender unit, so I would say double.

I emiled them and they said earth the sender unit to the - on the back of the dial. I have done but with the same result.

I think the sender unit is earthing its self, it is brass and its screwed into a metal bracket. The stock sender unit has only 1 wire so it must earth its self.

As for the perminate live feed, I presume you mean power. Well its is. Its connected to the cig lighter which comes on when the ignition is on which is what is instructed in the instructions.

I have also tried earthing it to other places. I quickly earthed it to the seat belt buckle, door locks even to a main frame.

Theroy. Could the - terminal on the dial be for senders which wont earth its self. So really I should not have to put a - on because its earthing through the signal connector?

Stuart

Nb. No, the last statement was rubbish.

Sorry, you are right - it made fvck all sence lol - I meant are there 2 wires coming from the new sender or just1???

Just 1.

Its like the stock one but shorter and wider.

I made a break through today. I rewired it again and this time when I turned on the ignition the dial went to 0, Yipee, but as soon as the engine started back it went to the other side.

I also wired the stock sender unit to the new dial, same thing again so I think the dial is fecked. Thanks for your help Andy, I am sending it back tomorrow.

Stuart.

P.S. You can help me with my Water Temp I may be getting next. biggrin.gif

But I will get a mecanical one. wink.gif

erm 1/8 BSP.

Erm, this may sound like a stab in the dark but how many -ve connections do you have on the back of the dial??? Is there one for the guage too? If there is that will need connecting to earth.

There are 3 connections,

One live "+" where I have put the power

Earth "-" which I have put the earth

Signal "S" where the wire from the sender plugs in.

And on the sender unit there is only 1 termninal, thats the signal one which goes to the "S" on the dial.

I tried earthing the case of the sender unit to the car with the same results.

I dont have any luck with stuff for my car.

My first Turbo Gauge the face was buckled and trapped the needle, my traction control didnt work and I had to send that back and now my oil pressure gauge isnt right some where. frown.gif
