How do I prep to paint?

Im reading different things on how to prep old paintwork for new paint.

So far i've thoroughly degreased everything.

Sanded off any bits of surface rust then rubbed with thinners and sprayed those spots with primer.

Now how do I prep the old paint so the new paint sticks properly? I've read about keying the surface with wet and dry but isn't that just going to make it dusty? With the way thinners removes paint it seems pointless to sand it then rub with thinners or is that the way it's supposed to be done?

you dont wipe with thinners ... you use panel cleaner and tac cloths

and you can use Wet and Dry paper ... ( with water WET ) this way it will not clog up the paper with dry paint

the other way to key the area is to use a pad of scotch brite similar to a scouring pad, and as mark says use panel wipe not thinners or turps and move it in 1 direction.

rubbing down rust and priming wont keep it at bay,you need to treat the metal with an agent that converts the corroded ares back to metal like jenolite etc bud,any pits need filling, dont use filler its porus, people have told me that fibre fill is best, its meant for bridging gaps but dries water tight.

Cheers Jimmer, that surface rust was literally dust there was nothing deep at all just where the battery and PAS had leaked in the past and it got sanded with a grinder. Would you still sand the primer back and treat it?

Will do, i'll strip it back tomorrow. Im glad it's been to cold to paint now!

Get your self a can of dinitrol converust and spray that over the cleaned area mate, you can then prime and paint as normal over it.
