Check timing

Since ive owned my Z it has refused to rev over 5.5k revs (unless in neutral). After much searching on TT.net it seems like the timing has jumped a tooth.

I have a normal timing light, is that not usable on a Z with no spark leads, so what do i need instead? How do i generally check the timing/adjust it? I just can't wait to get her goin properly smile.gif

Thanks

Rob

The timing light will only check the ignition timing, when people talk about jumping a tooth they will most likely be on about the cam timing. To check that you need to remove all the cam belt covers and count the belt teeth between the cogs, just like you were installing a new one.

Gulp....Thanks for the quick reply andy.. is this possible to do myself or am i gunna have to give it to someone else...? I do most stuff myself but does this involve taking the engine out?

Gulp... taking the covers off can be a bit time consuming if nothing else, if you don't have all the right tools, remove the rad shroud, viscous fan, rad hoses, PTU and wiring on covers, the 2 alloy hard pipes that go inside the covers area from rad pipes, these can be a bitch to do as the bolts are well in, once all this is off, about 8-10 small screws/bolts holding covers on, that's just from memory, maybe something i missed, but you get the jist.

K, ive taken the day off work tomorrow and a friend is coming round to help. I know how to get to the belt etc. but how can i tell if the belt has jumped a tooth at all? Are there marks on the belt/pulleys or how do people generally set the belt up when they change it?

Obviously while at it i will put on a new belt.

Thanks for any help.

just a warning but if you remove the belt you are suposed to replace it as if you use it again it could snap bad idea ££££££££
