Hi

I've only had my TT for 3 weeks and have been having a stumble/hesitation issue (which I know can be many things, but fuel pressure is one) and the MPG has been worse than I expected... came out this morning to the car and smelt petrol!

Looked at the back and could see a few dribbles of fuel on the exhaust but mainly above and to the side; looking through the wheel arch under the petrol tank door flap it looks like it could be around that area; possibly the filler pipe going into the tank? Is this a common/known issue?

Hadn't noticed the fuel leak in the last 3 weeks but had just filled her to the brim the night before AND she's parked slightly up hill at an angle so petrol would literally be leaning this way, so that may be why it's not leaked before!

Any suggestions/things to check/quick fixes? Or am I better of getting her to the garage ASAP for them to sort it?? I'm not particularly mechanic, I've fiddled around in the engine bay with spark plugs and the like before but fiddling near a fuel tank terrifies me....!!

Cheers

Rossi

Hi,

Yes it's a known fault (not that common but does happen). Do a quick search and you'll see posts about it.

Wouldn't imagine it would cost too much to get a good second hand one from someone breaking a Z on here

Thanks Vijay, so what part exactly is it/what would you call it - fuel filler pipe/hose? I already did a search for 'fuel leak' and read a number of posts but couldn't find anything particularly helpful... I'll have another search but if you have a key phrase/term I could look for / point me in the right direction that would be much appreciated :) Cheers!

fuel neck or filler neck.

It's not difficult to change, the only issue you may have is the small bolts may have rusted so possibly give them a good soak in WD40 the day before you do it ;)

I have a fuel filler neck in the garage that I can check over tomorrow for you, they do tend to rot away especially on UK cars or imports that have been around for some time.

Thanks Baz, mines a '92 UK model with a fair bit of corrosion I'm afraid to say! I believe I need to get the wheel off and remove a guard and then I can see? I'll try and get a look tomorrow but have a hectic day, might not be til Tuesday.

Yep LHR wheel off, there is a metal & plastic 2-piece shield to remove to allow access to the filler neck, as said spray some WD40 on all the bolts to try and prevent breakages, including the bolts on the tank. :)

Snapping them little bolts that hold the filler to the tank will bring on a whole new level of pain.

If Baz hasnt got a filler neck then I think I have.

Yes I have one from a low mileage import TT (same pipe as UK models) its very clean condition and been stripped back to bare meta, rust treated and painted with red oxide primer. £30 delivered

Might also be worth checking the tank whilst you are there, the straps go first, then it eats through the tank where the straps sit!

Ok guys I've managed to get the wheel off (damn silly aftermarket alloys witn non-standard size bolts grrr) and can confirm that it's definitely the fuel filler neck that's the problem. After removing the first guard I could see the guard underneath the neck/pipe was absolutely full of wet mud, coating the neck - probably helped rot it! Scraped all the mud out and I can see that the pipe is in a very bad way and that's where my leak is.

I've done some photos with labels so anyone else with this problem can easily see.

Can see the fuel filler neck location here:

And where the mud was:

Baz, will send you a message :)

looks familiar lol. Had this on my uk too, same mud trap. Worth checking the area above the neck in the arch as this traps it too, had to treat that area and i replaced my filler neck with 2nd hand one, painted with hammerite..all good 5yrs down the line. As stated pretty easy swap.

Ditto, give the panel around the filler cap a good check mine was fubard as well, and seen it on others. I had to make a new section up.

Just make sure you give the replacement filler neck a good clean and plenty coats of protective paint.

This was mine a couple of years ago mrrossi, all sorted now though :)

Rust is a terrible terrible disease :(

Sure is, but then in some sort of sick perverse way I enjoyed cutting all the rot out fabricating new panels and welding it all up.

Saying that I just hope yours aint too bad and that it's just the filler pipe thats affected. Just go easy when you are taking out the little bolts securing the pipe to the tank. Mine came out without a problem, but they could be easily broken.

I've not had a go at those bolts yet... there was another one further back on the guard/tray that was rusted to hell, had a bit of an attempt but left it for now... to be honest I'm tempted to get the local garage to do it, he's pretty cheap and reliable - it's only parts that would be pricey and Baz has sorted me out there - I just don't have the spare time at the mo.

Saying that, if I find a spare hour or two on Sunday I may have a quick crack at it :hammer:
