DOT 4 replaces dot 3 these days (which is what nissan specifies.

DOT 5.1 has a higher boiling point and mixes safely with DOT 3 and 4... costs more.

You cannot mix DOT 5 with the others as it's SILICONE BASED FLUID!

Serious question:

How does one fluid give better pedal feel than another. Fluids compress by f-all, so it can't be due to that. What can it be, lubricating properties, variations in expansion due to heat ?

Ah, OK see whet you mean - there is a difference between long term consistency and initial feel when you use new fluid.

I would suggest listening to what ANYONE says if they're speaking from personal experience rather than what their friends have told them.

On the off-chance that someone is interested in something which hasn't been said by Ay3388, I used DOT 5.1 in my AP racing 330 mm setup and it was faultless.

Also, prior to the AP racing setup, I overheated the pads on many occastions. On no occasion did I ever overheat the fluid. My thoughts would be that fluid is unlikely to be the weak link in your system.
