Old Blaupunkt stereo, non standard connection - any ideas?

Hi!

This is my first post on the forum... I picked up (what I *think* was a bargain) 1992 UK 300ZX twin turbo a couple of weeks ago, from reading some threads I believe pics are 'the law' so will put some up :) She's got a few mods, Japanese front bumper, 99 spec rear lights and aftermarket spoiler, Apexi air filter, larger exhaust and EPROM +70 bhp chip. There's a few rusty bits and the red paintwork is terribly faded on a few panels, but already had a quick go with t-cut (or rather Turtle Wax's 'safe cut'!) and it's coming back nicely already - will put some more pics up when she's all sorted!

First, some pics of her now...

Secondly... some questions about the radio. There's a Blaupunkt Werke Pasadena DJ cassette stereo, serial number BP5781S3765504, and another number on it, 7645781010. It *just* about works; the LCD display is dead though but after fiddling a bit I've got it to tune in with my radio transmitting MP3 player. But ideally I'd like to replace it.

Took her out and seems like a non standard connector block - please see the pics below. The bottom two 8 pin blocks look like normal ISO connectors but they're all stuck together with that other bit on top and obviously wouldn't fit a standard ISO stereo. I can go down the route of getting an ISO connector and rewiring it but was trying to avoid that pain; does anyone recognise the type of connector and know if I can get a simple plug & play adaptor? :confused1:

I also have a 'hesitation/stumbling' issue when cold; there's loads of threads about this though so will work through them first before asking any silly 'newbie' questions :whistling:

Cheers

that is a Standard ISO plugs for Sony and other head units ... 2 things u can do

Buy your self ISO adapter to new radio or

hard wire in your new ISo lead with radio

hello mate, looks like a nice motor. you'll find that red cars will always fade unless they are waxed regually (my old sierra always seemed to turn pink(ish) when ever the sun came out for long periods).

also they are not 99spec rear lights, they are after market crystal lights.

still looks very nice, how much did you get it for?

Thanks for the replies guys.

Mark - thanks, but - are you sure that's a Sony one? I've searched Google images and the Sony ones I can see look like the normal 2 x 8 pin blocks; they don't have that other bit on top. Similarly I searched for 'Sony head unit rear' and the connections on the back don't look like that. Else I'd just buy myself a Sony unit so I could plug it straight in!

Just tried searching for Blaupunkt head unit images too but the only ones I'm seeing are old ones...

The only images I've seen that look similar are the connectors on steering wheel/remote control units! Erm... that's not what I'm after.

Thanks Tomo... yeah I was avoiding red ones for that reason but red does suit the car (although I get the impression from this forum that 'black ones are faster' !) and basically got it a grand or more cheaper as the seller figured it'd need a respray - but he hadn't even tried t-cut! I actually swapped it! Great deal... I was selling a somewhat modified Mk1 MX-5 and he was after one... mine was up for £2750 - which I wasn't sure I'd get, hard to value; and he was asking £2600 for his (due to the bodywork/paint etc) - so we just did a straight swap!!

yep sure its sony ... old style tho .. not modern like your talking about ...

Ford/jvc load of other radio use the same one as its common connection

the bottom 2 parts look like standars iso but not sure about the top bigger plug any stereo you buy sould have the iso lead/plug if you know how to do wiring you should be able to also buy the opposite end with short cables to splice into your loom

just looking on the web the bigger top section looks like it is used for steering wheel controls/joystick

mmmm thanks guys... well, I'd be replacing with a modern stereo, not another old :)

I was trying to avoid wiring/splicing - I can do it - I just hate it, seem to take ages at it - and time isn't something I have lots of :(

I could try snapping off the top bit and plugging into a new stereo!! :)

i think a lot of stereo's have the bigger connector cut out built in but no pins so that connector may work, it would also work if you bought something with a trailing iso lead

Great stuff... thanks Mark... I may be in touch! I'll order a new stereo over the next few days and see how I get on, may give you a call if you're only in Derby I can perhaps pop over - I live in Nottingham but I'm away half the week working in north Wales...

The top ones are split into three parts, normally on older vw Audi and vaux hall, they were steering control, amp output and tel input/mute

The bottom are standard Iso

I had another look last night and traced the wires from the top block; all but one (which I assume was a shared earth - went to the lower blocks) went to a funny looking connector - that didn't plug into anything.

So it seems if I have trailing ISO connectors on the new stereo - which, it seems most do; manufacturers seem to have their own connector on the back and then their own cable plugged in with the two ISO 8 pin blocks - then I can just plug it straight in :)

If the ISO connections are on the back of the stereo then I'll have to snap the block up, which looks like I could do with a sharp knife; it's only thin bits of plastic keeping them together.

I just thought it wasn't going to be that easier as when I asked the seller why he hadn't changed the stereo (he'd owned the car 9 years) he said he'd took one look and the wiring was a complete jumble/mess and decided against it. Looks ok to me!

Piece of pi** - new stereo came today, plugged straight in, hurrah! Thanks all!

Nope, think it was just the previous owners comments, the weird 3 part block, and the wiring nightmare I had with another car that put me in panic mode! One of the easiest dashboard panels to remove I've come across too :)
