Some might of noticed I've hardly been on here for quite a while, work at SFS has been ridiculously busy with shows and staff holidays. Kind of lost my mojo on the cars again and even the garage build has stopped

I have to see the surgeon in 2 weeks as my specialist has said there's nothing he can do for me and the internal reconstructional surgery they did 12 years ago all has to come out and they can't redo it again as I have lost to much of my small bowel as it is. Gutted is an understatement, I'm not sure how I face this as before the reconstruction I had a tempoary fix which I hated and now this will be a permanent thing. I know this seems a little criptic but some people know my problems and should be able to work it out, at 38 this isn't something I want and my wife has had no experience of it either, its worrying how she and indeed I will feel with this. Took the step today to call the specialist nurses about counselling which for me is a big step as I 'don't do feelings' and usually do the pull yourself together speech but I know confidence will nose dive even if all goes well with no complications, just finding it hard to motivate myself about anything at the moment....

Sorry to bore you all with more updates lol

Some of the test results for the temperature came back today....

I always worry when the doc says to the wife you can stay for this and the doc sits down at the end of the bed, the blood sample from the line in my neck shows something but its not 'grown' enough yet for a full diagnoses but similar family to mrsa family.

Swab from wound on stomach is mrsa positive. F@@@ing great

So need ultra sound scan on my neck and heart as it can damage the heart but they don't think it has plus a TWO week course of iv antibiotics so I'm not going anywhere soon :-(

Even the doc has acknowledged its not gone well for me but keep smiling!

Test result from the bloods shows the mrsa is in my blood stream as well, showed on all tests :-(

In a room on my own now. Scan of the neck show inflammation around the jugular vein and some small blood clots, had a down day today.

Heart scan results not back but nurse says normally no news is good news, if it had caused major damage they report back quickly?

Hard to believe all the bad luck your having at the moment. It's one knock after another. Obviously I'm no expert but I agree with you that nothing travels faster than bad news so fingers crossed for good news on your heart scan and let's hope the anti biotics kick in soon.

So good news is, clots in the neck are small and not a cause for concern, heart scan is all clear with no damage currently but it can in theory still happen until infection is cleared.

Bad news, antibiotics is a 4 week course in hospital. Surgeon thinks the stoma is to far 'upstream' in the intestine which is why the output is high as there isn't enough intestine to absorb everything, they need to move it down. Only way is to go back in, while in they would remove the perforated pouch and reset the stoma which should in theory finish all the surgery I need. It's a big op that can take up to 7 hours but doesn't want to be done with mrsa so need to clear that, 2 weeks recovery for that op so could be in another 6 weeks so 12 in total. Oh well...

So saw the surgeon today, this is 100% the way he's going. So in about 3 weeks the antibiotics should be done and I've put on a few kgs he will go back in. Cut off anymore adhesions on the bowel, resite the stoma at the end of the bowel I have and remove the old pouch I had done 16 yrs ago. Think it's about 6 hrs of surgery and they go back in through the same scar that has just healed so back to square one in the healing process, no driving, lifting etc for 6 weeks and hopefully we won't have the bowel not working issue this time!

It is for the best to get it all done and finished now rather than in 6 months but a tough time ahead again

Hi Anthony, Well it looks like they have a plan now and could get everything done in one hit..... I bet daytime tv and being laid up are driving you nuts....

Hope today is a better day than yesterday and tomorrow is better than today.....

I have to ask...... Are you using SFS custom silicone hoses for the install as I hear they are better quality than OEM......

Take care

Russ

Blimey mate, you've gone through the mill and back by the sounds of it, fingers crossed you can see the end of it all and all goes well after the OP.

By the way you are not boring us with the updates lol, its good to get it off your chest and have us to help take your mind off it.

Well been in now for 9 weeks and have managed not to go mad! I've been allowed days out inbetween treatments (back by 7pm) which has been nice and as I feel a lot better for it. Managed to claw my weight up from 62.5 to 68kg in 3 weeks, the MRSA is now clear and the antibiotics finish tomorrow so free from a drip for the 1st time in the 9 weeks. Also this week I have some tests in prep for the operation. Barium trace, so they inject a barium liquid in through the stoma and x-ray/scan me so they can map out the internal pouch and see how much small bowel I have they can add into the system. Fun starts Wednesday 9.30!!

All the Best Anthony...... Will be thinking of you on Wednesday...... Hoping all goes well and you recover quickly mate......

Had some tests done today, barium trace to see how how small bowel left between the stoma and the pouch. done by injecting a trace liquid into the stoma and x-ray. Then barium drink to see how much small bowel between the stomach and stoma. Seems there's more than they thought so they thought the high output could be caused by a lack of bowel seems not to be the case. Not sure how this impacts future plans ?? Both left me feeling quite sick and rubbish, that was then compounded by an email from work saying they are cutting my pay. So the wife is off to see the bank to see if we can see switch mortgage to interest only !

  • Author

Boomshell today!!! With the lack of extra bowel the doc says the next op won't help the high output. This means he's now possibly not in a rush to do the next stage and is thinking of sending me home!

Whilst I would love to go home, it means I could wait 2 weeks to 2 months for the op that I do need to remove and reposition things which was part of the whole picture, there's so many things I'm not ready for to do at home, prep by the stoma nurses, home care as wife is back in work, high codeine dosage means driving is unsafe and it would mean I'm off work longer as by the time I'm better he could pull me back in for the next op. My head feels so messed with now as for the last 2-3 weeks we've prepared for an op in the next 7-10 days max, so stressed now its not real.

Nightmare. Although I'm sure they won't send you home until your home care is in place. I know when I had an op last year they wouldn't release me until the district nurses had confirmed they were coming and it sounds like you need more specialist care. It's really frustrating for you but at least you will be at home. Maybe it will be more relaxed for you there.

Hi Anthony, I don't know what to say really that will be any help...... As Roobarb said, at least you might be more comfortable at home.....

Maybe he will decide to get the operation done sooner?

Well guess who's going home tomorrow... ! 10 weeks after it all started I'm

homeward bound after some meetings about home care.

We spent quite some time with the surgeon Friday, who that morning had a meeting with all the clinical leads in this field about my case. The unanimous decision was that currently my body isn't strong enough to be put through an 5/6 hour operation, the risks right now in doing it out weighs any benefits now they know there isn't any extra bowel. A major factor in this decision has been down to the difficulties and challenges that I have faced over the past few months - as unexpected as they were its put my body in a vulnerable position and operating now to "finish the job" is too risky. It's not the news we wanted or expected I was shocked, upset and very disappointed about this decision , as I really wanted this to be all over but having talked things through with Kerry we feel a little better and I think I can see their reasons.

Step going forward are that I will be looked after by two key consultants - mr hawthorn (who we know well) & the surgeon. Both will see me regularly and will monitor progress, monitor blood levels as several things are at low levels and look to give me the best solutions to the situation now - aiming to get me back to full strength. They want me to get my life back and get well and recovered. Then in 6 months time if I am well and strong enough they'll look to finish the operation. Although I may decide not to have it if I can manage things as they are as that is a possible option.

So that's where we are. It's going to be strange for me coming home, being surrounded by people all day
