Engine woes - top end rattle?

Hi,

Heres the problem, gave my Z to my neighbour to fit 2 tyres and when I get it back theres a serious top end rattle/knocking! Not something which has been progressing but which has just suddenly appeared.

Dont want to blame the guy as it would likely have happened if I was driving, so we'll put it down to co-incedence.

A mate is a master tech for a Peuogot dealer and had a listen last night and he's confirmed it is definately a top end problem, possibly a broken valve spring or a hydraulic lifter problem.

Anyone any idea if this could be the case? Is this a common Z problem (mine has done 90K)?

If it is a valve spring or lifter, can the repair be made without removing the whole engine unit? (Hopefully this is the case as the lad ain't to keen to remove the whole engine and it would look like a dealer job or specialist engine builder frown.gif )

Your thoughts/advice would be appreciated.

Colin,

Does it do this every time you start it? I have heard one zed before which rattled badly on first start up but then never did it again. Sounds like something blocking an oil way or something. Does the noise go away as the revs increase? Another possibility would be the springs in the intake cam sprockets broken - these are for the varible cam timing control system.

Andy,

The noise doesn't dissapear unfortunately after startup or when the revs increase (it just gets quicker).

Pretty sure something mechanical has failed...

Unlikely to be a broken valve spring as the engine running would suffer.

It is more likely a lazey lifter, what oil you running? fully synth can be a bit thin in some zed engine`s (dependant on tolerances) maybe an oil & filter change may be a start point, followed by a change of oil again after say 1000 miles to hopefully clear out any build up.

There are some products available to add to the oil which are supposed to quiet down lifter`s, I have not tried them so can not comment on their success either way but worth concidering.

Hi,

Running a fully synthetic 5W 40? Any recommendations what oil to fire in then?

If the top end does need stripped down can this be done without engine removal? How easy is a lifter to replace?
