No Electrical Power at all!

Hi folks

Another day, another problem!

Yesterday I fitted my speedo converter, with the help of these forums, and everything seemed okay. I went for a few short drives, played with all the switches and buttons on the dash and declared the job well done.

When I got back from the pub last night I sat in front of my house and decided to play with the lights, and make sure they all checked out okay. I was turning them on and off, getting out, checking the bulbs and stuff, when suddenly I lost all power to the whole car. I got back in and shut the door, and all the power came back for about 2 minutes, then went again. The car is totally dead, and I had left the window open XD .

So thats the story. The car seems to have no power to anything at all, not the lights, dash, stereo, interior lights, alarm or anything. After fitting the speedo converter yesterday the car was running perfectly all day until this happened.

My first check will be the battery of course, but I was wondering if anyone had any advice on how to proceed from there, as I have the feeling the battery will be fine.

Cheers

John

Thanks Medallion Man, I'll check there too.

Something I forgot to mention was that there is an aftermarket Autowatch immobilizer fitted, don't know if that could cause any problems but thought I should mention it.

slamming the door and having it work again, would point to either a loose connection or fuse on its way.

or something wrong with the immobilizer (e.g. internal damage or connection).

would be worth your time checking the fuse box in the drivers foot well for water damage / corrosion as well.

good luck

All good ideas, I'll check into them. One thing I noticed was there was a couple of cable hanging under the dashboard in the foot well. The go from somewhere under the steering column and disappear into the area by where my left foot sits. I wondered if I had caught them getting in but them seemed intact when i checked this morning. To be honest I don't know what they are for.

I'm at work right now but I will check everything you mentioned Medallion Man.

Cheers

First port of call with no power would be the battery terminals check there, even if they look tight and don't move, undo them pop them off, give the terminals a clean pop them back on and retighhten them then check again

Vods, he did say that in his first post.... :)

I know your just affirming it...

Right, checked the battery, it seems fine. I looked in the fuse panels and the first thing that caught my eye was that the 10A fuse in the front board (marked air con) had lit up, so i think that one has blown. Would that cause the whole car not to start?

I found the immobilizer unit and the LED on it wasn't lit so I don't think its active.

And just like that its sorted, for now.

Went around pressing all the fuses down firmly, re attached the battery terminals and its come back to life. Thanks everyone for the advice again!
