How do you know when the fuel pump is about to give up?

There has been a low hum/whistle from the rear of the car previously which the mechanic said was from the fuel pump on top of fuel tank.

This dissappeared but just came back louder than ever this evening sounds like hissing. Thought I had a puncture but no (Its bound to be something more expensive with a Z). The performance of the car remains unchanged.

When you floor it the noise dissappears?

Is this the end of the fuel pump?

Help needed I'm driving to Spain next Week.

Hi Roy,

Definately sounds like your fuel pump, mine made the same noise just before it went funny, but if the car isn't stumbling or hesitating, it doesn'y sound like it's too far gone.

I have heard that the 300zx can run for quite some time like this but it sounds like a wonky fuel pump - and one place you dont want a wonky pump and a whistling rear end is Spain.

They're a bit funny over there wink.gif
