Tested both my 02 sensors last night using the obd2, it is my understanding the check engine light should blink on and off between rich and lean. even after several minutes at 2000rpm it would be lit for a good 30 seconds before it went out for another good 30 seconds and so on. Is this normal?

odb2? is yours a later model car? thought the zed had a consults port up to around 96, unless my memory fades me.

 

But on the ECU test, if you turn the little screw thing, fully clock wise then counter clock wise it should flash the codes on the power light (on uk spec cars its just a blank orange bit on the dash)

Sorry my mistake, I read the guide wrong. It does have the ecu code reader. I got code 55, that means no fault, correct?

 

As for the 02 sensor bit, I followed this guide:

 

To check O2 sensors

 

1. While in Mode II, start the engine and warm the engine up.

 

2. The ECU is now checking the left O2 sensor. Run the engine at 2000rpms for 2 minutes and watch the "Check Engine" light. The light should be blinking constantly.

 

3. To check the right O2 sensor, turn the screw on the ECU fully clockwise, wait 2 seconds, and then turn back fully counter-clockwise, the ECU will now be checking the right O2 sensor. Run the engine at 2000rpms for 2 minutes while watching the "Check Engine" light. As before, the light should be blinking constantly.

 

4. The light indicates the signal from the O2 sensor to the ECU. When the light is ON, it is rich. When the light is OFF, it is lean. It should be blinking, which means it is constantly switching between rich and lean. If the light is not constantly blinking, there is something wrong and will require further investigation.

 

5. Turn the screw on the ECU full clockwise, wait 2 seconds, and turn back fully counter-clockwise. The ECU will be back in Mode 1

 

So, are my parameters too far out? I assumed it should be clicking in and our from rich and lean quickly...

Sounds like you've got a duffer mate, a conzult test is much easier to see if available. I've got both of my O2s unplugged at the mo as I've got a duff one, many people on here have got them unplugged, resorts to a pretty healthy base map, could try that and see if it cures your problem?

Trouble is, I am getting smoke out of nearside tailpipe when the engine is warm and ambient temp is warm, I first thought its a turbo seal on that side, but, as a friend pointed out it smells more fuel like and is white in colour. I have since plugged my 02`s back in and it seems to be better (as in it can tickover for upto 15 minutes with only a whisp or two of smoke, wheras before it would billow out and wouldnt stop until engine reves rised...

That's what I was getting, over fuelling and pure fumes out the back, since I unplugged them it's fine. I do intend fitting a couple of new ones at some point. Perhaps it's something else causing yours to overfuel?

Also, what is this plug? I found this whilst checking my pcv valves the other night

 

That's an O2 sensor mate I think? If not, it's your dett. sensor, reckon it's O2 tho with the red white and black.

 

You haven't got an O2 and the dett. sensor plugs the wrong way round have you? They are interchangeable, I did it after the rebuild, took me ages to suss out why I was getting code 34, duh...

Well, I had in total 3 plugs unplugged, two either side (near to the pcv valves which I assume to be the 02`s) then the one pictured (right in the middle of the car at the back of the bay near the bulk head). I am getting no codes, just code 55
