I removed my pcv tonight to see if it was clogged, once removed I shook it and it rattled, this shows its good, correct? Inside the pipe there was a small round metal restrictor, I dont remember this being there when I purchased the new hoses 2 years ago, what is this for, why is it there? Its just pushed in halfway down the tube...

Thanks, Dan

not sure on the shaking technique never heard about that to see if the PCV valve is any good, i usually clean them up and then blow through them, it should allow air one way and not the other, as its just a spring with a plate on the end for the breather system

there is a small restricter in there designed to help stop the larger oil particles entering (though might be wrong on that bit lol), but this usually gets clogged up with age. it is supposed to be there and its present on both pipes, sometimes there is even what looks like a pipe cleaner in there as well.

The bearing should be tight, when you push in with a screwdriver etc, shouldnt rattle, so i would say they are fubarred and the restrictor as Ian said

it sounds like you are talking singular.... surely you mean both your PCV valves???

clean them and put them back in, if it makes no difference to whatever problem you've got, get new ones and if still not difference it's not a problem with them... :)
