whilst just changing my front disks, my drivers side front brake dust / heat shield fell off, this is the large sheet of metal behind the disk, due to the rust getting into it. it wasnt held in place by any screws or bolts, just sits on the hub.

Is it needed for MOT, or is there some stupid reason in the mot guild-lines that it has to be in place, like if you run over someone, it has to be there so the person you ran over, after hitting the bumper, being dragged under the car, past the splash guard, missing the cross member, you dont get your arm caught in the moving brake disk??, then after you have dealt with the exhaust just below the turbo's, you hit the rear diff and flop out of the back of the zed, as the drivers then stops....

anyone?

It will be fine without it for the MOT, in fact when fitting larger discs the shield has to be cut off or at least cut back, never heard of it causing any issue with MOT.

jeff your a star mate...

now i have to remove the other one to match.

cheers

I think its to help guide air along the back of the disc and also prevent heat getting near the cv boots etc?

Nice and descriptive lol. Now I know what it'd be like to be run over by a zed

from the testers manual

reason for rejection:

a brake back plate, wheel cylinder or caliper securing device loose, missing or excessively deteriorated

So the the back plate is exempt then-that's good.......

Not according to what Paul just quoted from the Manual..

no - its a reason for rejection - ie, failure!

Read it again!-the SECURING DEVICE missing or loose, not the actual Back plate.

That's how it reads to me anyhow!

I read it as if any of the following is loose, missing or excessively deteriorated :

-brake back plate

-wheel cylinder

-caliper securing device

But Im not sure now. You might be right, It could refer to their nut/bolt fixings.......the joys of MOT tester manual interpretation

LOL! ok ,perhaps I should have included the method of inspection:

presence and security of brake back plates, wheel cylinders and calipers

reason for rejection:

a brake back plate, wheel cylinder or caliper securing device loose, missing or excessively deteriorated

:D

Bang on ! the problem with MOT manual is items are always subject to interperation, consider how many zeds / other cars are running around with these removed or cut back with bigger discs on, if a serious problem it would have come up years ago.

god - prepared to be bored to tears LOL!! it used to be a 1 day course & they have now stretched to out to 2 days

the point is - its a failure!! Sorry!

Did you cut yours when you fitted your big discs??

But a dust shield is NOT a brake backplate.

A brake back plate is what the wheel cylinders. shoes etc are fixed to.

ah yes, good point !

Bang on, the front dust shield is not a reason for rejection
