NZR - How easy is it to change an Almera timing chain?

As above - My dad's Almera needs a new timing chain and the garage are looking at charging him over £600 for the privilege. I think it's something I could do a damn sight cheaper than that. I've done my zeds timing and as you know that's a quad cam v6, so my thinking is that a duel cam 4 pot should be a lot easier to do.

Is there anything I need to be aware of etc...?

I've only got the Haynes manual to follow so any advice or tips would be great.

Almera is a 1.5s (think it's an N15 model)

what engine is it? i had the sr20 block in my gti, i was meant to change the chain but never got round to it :-( according to folk on the owners club its not a hard job to do

the only problem i would see is no timing marks .. u would need locking keys but all so very very limited space

remember when getting the chain cover off dont damage it as u dont want oil leaking once its bk on ..

not done one on a nissan - but on Mercs your open a link on the chain, join the new one & wind the engine over, then disconnect & rejoin the new chain. piss easy!! :)

almera.jpgN15 model you either have a 1.4 or 1.6 according to autodata, no special tools required. You have 2 chains and need to align the copper links with the marks on the aux and cam sprockets.

I had a good read through the haynes and to be honest it looks a right pig of a job and as he needs it quickly (i'm very slow but thorough :)) He's going to get the garage to do it..

Thanks for all the advice lads and it's definitely a 1.5 Graham, I've probably given the wrong model number.. :)

The N15 didn't come as a 1.5.

The N16 1.5DCi unit is a Renault engine, and I'm 99% sure it's a BELT not a chain.

Yeah it must be an N16 then as it's a 1.5 petrol with a chain.. If it don't start with a z I ain't interested

I'm Guessing the Chain stretched??:ninja:

That's what he's been told mate. He's had it from new and it's done 80,000 so it's done well really.

Common because Renault made the chains out of Chocolate!

Most of the Almeras I come accross in work have in excess of 120k on the original chains....just a bit noisy thats all. Do you think there may be a bit more life in the old girl yet? Expensive repair for an old car

There's still a lot life left in the old girl, my dad's reluctant to get another car as he only really uses it for getting around town etc. I've told him that he won't get his money back on the repair. Apart from a dodgy sensor this is the first real job it's had to have. Been a very reliable little car.

There was some rust on the front crossmember but I got in there and stopped it spreading. It's filled with Dinitrol now :)

I love how google always brings me back here in the end!

Need to sort this on the woman's new shed - N16 SX 1.5. The kits are very expensive, will nissan supply just the chain? Everything else looks fine
