smokey joe...

Pulled up at a toll boothe this morning, looked in the RVM as I pulled away only to see lots of black smoke from behind (once I was moving though it did go). Have read about this before but can't remember what could cause it. Its fine when warm and has never 'smoked' like that before.

It does not smoke when first starting from cold either.

I did boot it a bit from out of a junction (to about 3500rpm) when still cold (naughty boy!) before I noticed the smoke but that was it.

Whats the damage then?.

I was thinking though maybe its something like the turbo seals failing?, I dunno, I'm a thicko when it comes to engines. wink.gif

 

Mr jaylox sir, I havn't forgotten about the setiquest stuff, I've just been extreeeeemly busy designing a new 100w HiFi amp for a friend of mine, so will try and sort something out, even if I copy it and stuff it in the post!!!.

 

 

Ahh, have just read posidrives msg about smoking after composing my msg. seem to of had the same/similar thing happen although I'm not running in saftey boost and my cats are (I think) ok.

If it is blue smoke, it's oil. If it's black, it's carbon. Carbon can be removed with cleaning agents, but if you're air-fuel is too rich, it has to be turned down.

 

As for your turbo seals, I'm not sure how that would contribute to the problem... just make sure you let the engine idle for a minute or two after a hard run... especially on the Z. If the oil is not able to circulate while the turbos are still hot, it tends to cook onto the surfaces.

 

When the turbos start to stick, you can find yourself with even less power than you'd have with NA. Ideally, car makers would include an oil kit to keep lubricant flowing for a minute or two after the engine has shut down.

black is carbon(read some posts a while back on sooty zorsts)too rich fuel

white smoke is water(head gasket?)

Thank you chaps, yep it was black smoke, I probably shifted some deposits after 'giving it some' from a junction (nice little sideways action to boot by the way wink.gif ).

 

As for turbo care, I always let it idle on my driveway in the morning for at least 5 mins before driving off and even then I normally keep the revs below 3k rpm (mostly!) for the first few miles. At other end I again let the engine idle for a couple of mins before switching off. I'll use my turbo timer if i have driven it hard or just after a countryside burn.
