Smoke Panic!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I floored it this afternoon to get away from a prat in a Nova that was tailgating me. He soon disappeared, problem is it was in a cloud of white/light grey smoke that came from my exhaust rather that into the distance. Any ideas. It's panic time. On the funny side, you should have seen his facxe when the smoke cleared biggrin.gif

It wasn't the usual early morning smoke that you get on damp days because I has already done about 20 miles.

I floored it again about 5 minutes later without any smoke. There is no smoke when idling.

I'm currently stuck in safety boost

I know the cat has collapsed. Perhaps I'm clutching at straws, but could it have been a cloud of the cat leaving?

I'm sure she's also running a bit rich since the insides of the tailpipes are very, very black. Also seem to be a bit damp but not smelling of petrol.

Head/Gaskets replaced 5 months ago so hopefully it's not these

I dont think its much to be worried about personally, but I may be wrong. If your cats a have collapsed, get it fixed pronto, its not gonna help.

I get a puff of smoke when I first floor it and it is just a single puff and not a stream. My pipes are black to inside and I think I am running ruch too. I hear the AVI valves can cause your car to run rich if not working properly, and mine have been gurgling for a while.

I think the smoke is mostly soot being shot out of the exhaust.

I would be more worried about being on safty boost. Are you sure? If so that means you are detonating.

apart from the condensation on a morning, any smoke which aint normal cant be a good sign?

id definatly get those cats sorted tho.jay

my car has started gurgling when I start it up... is that a problem with the aiv? This looks like another job for...

No that is a job with a drill!! biggrin.gif biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

NO! Seriously!. For a temp fix, you drill a hole in the bottom of it and drain out the water.

Cats are going to be gutted in a couple of weeks. Anyone know if this is something I need to tell my insurance company about?

I'm in safety boost because the detonation sensor is intermittently dead. Plan to check with bypass soon then fix properly when funds healthier.

At the moment I've got one AIV out and the AIV vacuum system temperarily disconnected and plugged. I'm trying to take it apart to clean, but despite numerous attempts the screws refuse to loosen despite application of penetrant. Any idea on getting the screws loose. The damm things seem soft so I'm worried about destroying the heads. Any ideas?

Naaahh!! Don't tell them. If they investigate, say that they self-destructed and blew theirselves out of the exhausts!!

Right on. The smoke coming out the back is almost certainly some oil product that was in the intake manifold, but needed powerful revs in order to suck it into the intakes.

Screws and bolts are best loosened with bee's wax... best stuff on earth, but it requires that you heat up the target screw (usually with a lighter) then apply a sliver of bee's wax. It gets sucked into everything, and NOTHING holds up to it. I work in shipping, and bee's wax is in almost every engine room. It works on the most rusted, siezed up bolts you will find anywhere.

BTW, how do you change your air-fuel mixture? I used to be keen on power, but I have been modifying the car more for fuel economy lately... I know, huge waste. Geo Metro is a better way to go for that.
