rear shocks

had the rear shocks replaced to pass the MOT bout two months ago, though Ive noticed the left rear side is slightly higer than the left, also when I push down on the rear left it doesn't feel like there is any play in the shock. The shocks are Nissan standard bought from SE.

Any ideas before I take it back to the people that did the job

cheers rob

Hello Rob,

Would that not be a problem with the springs and not the shocks?? Did you have them changed as well? One side of my car is higher on the rear and I'm hoping it's the springs.

Vijay

I think it was just the shocks they replaced, friggen expensive frown.gif

rob

well then ride height problems would be springs I would imagine frown.gif

Vijay

what does that actually mean? how do the springs just go weired on you? if so hoe much are they, any ideas, or should I say for just the right side spring

Hello Rob,

over time springs will sag as they lose their tension. If you've got the originals on, chances are that they have sagged. Not sure how much stock ones are, Mike Feeney would probably be the best man to speak to on that. There was a small group buy on Blitz lowering springs that ended last week that you might still be able to get in on. If so give Johnny at GPS a call.

I'm pretty certain you'de change both sides at the same time.

cheers vijay for the advice, for right now I cant afford anything so I'll have to put them on hold for now.

thaks rob

You might need to remove the rear inside trim and check that they didnt bodge up the actuators when they refitted them to the shocks. It is possible to put them on wrong and jam the actuator in the stiff setting.

Put your ignition on and handbrake on and you should feel both sides stiff at the back on a bounce test. With the ignition off they revert to soft. If one stays hard then that could be the problem.

Just a thought

Willie

Not if it's a Jap import they don't. Pretty sure it's only UK/US Z's that have that fancy 2 mode rear suspension.

Rob mentioned that the shocks were very expensive. That makes me think they might have fitted the UK ones as the import stock ones are really cheap I hear. If they did they could still have left one with the control rod turned to the stiff position. I know its unlikely if they knew what they were doing but if the people that did the job didnt know about the actuator system then the top end of the piston rod looks pretty much like any other except its hollow with a flat of a screwdriver type insert that gets turned with the actuator for UK cars. These would still fit an import car no problem with actuators missing.

I think the might of used uk spec shocks the car is uk though when i picked the car up after havin the job done I didn't notice it as much its onl past couple of months that there seems to be a difference, if what u said is right then wouldn't the left be locked in position or could the of knocked it b accident. Should i go and confront the mechanics that did the job?

cheers rob

I would also check all the parts and bushes are correctly in place when you remove the shocks again. I just picked up my car again after having found some vital bushes missing.

And the Buggers put a scratch in my new paint down to the metal. Now I've driven it home there's no point moaning to them. poo!

Rob

If its a UK car with UK type shocks then they are defo with actuators. Did you notice the right side stiff up with the diagnostic test? Get the pages from the manual and check with the mechanics that they did know about the actuators.

If you are up to it removing the interior trims inside is not so hard. You start at the middle at the back and work round. You take out the rear blind and the fittings under them. I think you also have to loosen the back seat mounts. You can then get at the top mounts. As well as checking the actuators are fitted on correctly also check the wiring plug that is about 8" from the actuator. When I changed mine, one actuator was actually disconnected- prolly due to someone changing the speakers and pulling at the cable. It was the same side shocker that was totally shafted. Once the actuators are off it is easy to check they work with the same diagnostic test. Obviously the mechanics also had to remove the rear trim

Good luck

cheers for the info I'll trY and get down to this prob as soon as I get the car back from the paint shop

thanks rob

Rob,

Got to replace my rear shocks, just out of interrest how much did SE charge you for the shocks?

Pete

Hi Pete the shocks were a bit more expensive than buying form a dealer I think they were about £115 each, I know expensive.

hope this helps
