Work for free? would you ?

I`ve been offered and small build project ( a summer house) from some clients I built an extension for last year. they are a very reputable landscape garden specialists and their work is excellent!!!

my dilemma is, they want a summer house making for RHS Tatton park flower show which is in the next few weeks, BUT they have asked would we do it for free!!!! if they provide the materials!! i reckon we could, in 2 days, build something quite substantial , but for free????

We can advertise on the stand and probably get free entrance for the show, and then probably get some nice plants flowers even the summerhouse after the event!!!

What would you lot do??

Going to meet her tomorrow, a slightly reduced labour rate is first on my mind and then `MY` freebies, then yes I`m going for it :)

good move:thumbup1:

My 2p, you would get a good rep for being a top bloke, plus the free advertising, plus plants, plus getting into the show, word of mouth really does go a long way.

I would depending on terms.

Do you need the advertising Daz? If you think it's needed i'd have to agree with Vods, especially if it's a high end sort of event even a couple of jobs would see you good wouldn't they? Just don't give out the email address from the website, get a stack of business cards made up with all your details and tell people to use that email addy.

Let us know what happens

years ago i did the roof on Chester City Cathedral and still get results off that one contract today

You don't need the advertising do you? I thought you always had work booked in. The shows not local either is it so any potential clients could be some distance away. My opinion - not worth it.

No, I don`t really need the advertising, BUT we've gone a bit quiet recently, loads of enquiries but nothing set in stone , It is a high end event but as PhilP says, my always local work will be getting a bit far field, I don`t mind travelling but I reckon i would be travelling to give a quotation and may not get the job!! I`ve still not ruled it out yet, and I will see what's offered tomorrow, cheerz for the input(s) :)

As you know, our vans are not sign written and all our work is word of mouth, but currently only 6 weeks work ahead and nothing in the pipe line after that yet, a lot of work can come in 6 weeks but it does get worrying , so thought it was a decent avenue at the show, but yes your right, the distance may be a problem!! its 42 miles to the event so hopefully clients could be on the right side of this for me, mmmm decisions decisions

You need to access the market exposure you will get from free advertising. Your effectively providing sponsorship to the event. I deal with a lot of companies in regards to Sponsorship for our Race Team and its quite surprising just how generous many companies will be supplying materials and parts at reduced rates or free of charge in exchange for their logo on your car, equipment and website.

Push for as much advertising as you can get of them - space for a large sign, your company logo details on any Publications related to the event - Website, Booklets, magazines...etc

But then if your booked up as it is, and not looking to expand then its not really going to be worth it.
