If your AIV's are blocked like mine are then the ECU will over compensate the fuelling by as much as 7 percent. wink.gif

I need to get mine sorted asap aswell, they've been gurgling away at tickover for eons!

hi tim, i thought id leave it too cos it only started a few days ago.... thing is 2day i noticed the detting... any ideas if theres a connection??

AIV's are emission control devices, and have absolutely nothing to do with the operation of the engine.

They're downstream from the O2 sensors, so they're completely out of reach of the engine feedback system.

The 7% fuel I mentioned is programmed into the engine computer.

Macca had detonation a while back and it was a bad tank of fuel.

What are you running in it at the moment? Try Optimax or Super Unleaded.

Have you reset the ECU? Disconnect the battery for about an hour then reconnect it and see if safety boost kicks in again.

Could be timing!

Where are you? Anyone near you with a ConZult?

Duct tape is like the Force, it has a light side, a dark

side and it holds the entire Universe together!

But, if it causes the engine to overfuel by 7% (and I didn't know that) then the engine will be running rich and therefore detonation is increasingly unlikley (right?)

Yep which is why the AIV valves are nothing to do with detting.

Jaz are you sure it's the AIV's that are gurgling and not the cooling system? If you've got an airlock in the cooling system that will also cause the dreaded gurgle! wink.gif

Are you using any coolant?

ive got the gurgle 2!

if mine is the aiv"s why dont i hear anything at idle?

ive had suggestions that my prob could be my timing ,

and my gargle is 'detting'

can you get detonation when ya car fuel is rich

ive done a flush and bleed(thanks macca)and ive still got a gargle when accelerating?

fooooooooooooookin doing my head

honks ,gargle wat next?

hi tim, mate im running on unleaded and i only think its the AIV cos from what andy told me and the symtoms i read on tt.net.

but im quite sure that it is...the noise is even more apparant when you put your ear close to the drivers side wiper or open the door.( definately only during idle)

im not using any coolant but the systems full of that crap, radblock or somin??

i only recall reseting the ecu last week, before the 'gurgling' and the dettin started..

also mate, the ecu is giving me code 13... temp sensor, ive changed it but its still there.

im in east london guys...

cheers tim, 1 prob after another... wink.gif

regards jaz

I posted something in the past week or two about how you could check continuity of the wiring from the ECU connector to the temp sensor. That may be worth a try, give search a go.

(Knew I should have put it on my web site!)

Code 13 is the reason for the safety boost!!! You have a connection problem somewhere. Have you measured the resistance of the temp sensor???? Also make sure it is the 2 pinned sensor NOT the single pin one as that is only for the guage cluster. The correct one is on the left looking from the front of the car on the top metal coolant pipe.

If you want, I'll email you my mobile tel no. and I can talk you through possibilities wink.gif

  • 3 weeks later...

Is there any harm in disconnecting the AIV's by putting a plug on the vacumm hoses ??

Hi,

I have the AIV gargle problem too! I see it is very common, does it keep re-occurring?If so how often?

Luckily as i have just bought the car the dealer is going to fix it for me, i gave the dealer the tech info from TT net on how to fix it... Is it a case of fixing it or do you have to replace the offending AIV(s)?

Just wondering...

Barry

hi guys,

roy mate, there is no harm in taking them out what so ever!!! waste of space!

AIV removal instructions are here :- http://www.aus300zxclub.com/tech/aiv/

aiv.htm

nelson, if it is the AIV(s) you'll hear that gurgling sound best at idle and when your door(s) is open. It wont go away until you sort it!

so you have a choice:

a) replace them ( complete waste of time )

b) little repair job ( drill a 5mm hole in the bottom of the hose that goes into the AIV box, which drains the water it collects )

or

c) remove them ( the better option )

jaz

it says that the directory listing is denied... is there somewhere else I can look to find out how to remove the AIV
