Hi Guys..

Looks like im buying the gearbox I asked for advice on, so now..

im guessing im better off putting a new clutch in at the same time?

What do you recommend? Im never going to be pushing big power.. just the usual mods which I doubt will ever exceed 400hp..

interested in what you have and why....

I have run an RPS sport street for years - holds power well with a nice feel to it for both pedal feel & when pulling away! :)

You will want to change the rear crank oil seal while its off too. Do not think its too expensive. Also worth checking the rear water pipes while the box is off as the lower one has a habit of leaking.

Check that both the clutch fork and pivot ball are good and the release bearing is smooth. For piece of mind I replaced all mine with new. You'll also need a manual spigot bush for the engine.

i am running a RPS MAX STREET clutch. on a Fidanza flywheel.

I have just made my first trip using it and Im happy with the "feel" Most of you wont like it cos its a TT set up activated by a non servo NA pedal. So moderate force required to activate.

I bought it because it was the most powerful organic clutch I could find.

It will be overkill for my NA power but it will take lots of hard pepetitive launchs Im sure

Would you buy a second hand rps clutch? 16K covered for £100?

the sites ive looked at are mainly us based, any good UK sites to purchase from?

Maybe.

i would want to see it and examine it closely . especially for finger wear. Also friction material wear.

16K??? well 16k in a reps mondeo on the motorway is not a lot. 16K in some TTs will probably wear out the clutch. depends on car. driver. power and style of driving.etc.

most new clutch kits come with a new release bearing and some have a new spigot bearing too.

so check that out before you buy separately.

Very few people in the UK hold stocks of stuff for 300ZX due to lack of demand.

Ceramic puck clutch (4 or 5 ) will have all of the performance yiou need with out the requirement of a massive left leg muscle and available in the UK no import duty and manufactured to our requirment specifically for the Z32. and at a competative price too.

I would also recommend the rps max street clutch. Very nice feel.

My current one is a southbend clutch and seems fairly nice.

Not sure if it's any good but I have an old puck clutch from jeff in the garage. Think it's best but if you want to look at it to get an idea of what they look like feel free

Cheers Jeff, was going to ask best places to buy the rps as they all seem to be from the States..

Have you any recommendations on where to buy from? a search brings up loads on ebay in various guises...

doesnt the number refer to the pattern around the edge? what impact does the number have on drive and use?

If only u were a little closer.. lol.. unless I get a gearbox and book it for beginning of next year and ask you to do a few bits at the same time?? decisions..lol..

Ok the paddle numbers is important as it denotes what the clutch is going to do for the drivability and the performance, easy way to explain is the more paddles the smoother the drive take up is, the less paddles the higher the clamping force is.

So with this in mind understanding what the owner of the zed wants exactly is paramount, incedently neither will be overly heavy but a 4 paddle would be extream for road use and is the reserve of track day cars really, would not be nice in traffic etc.

The 6 paddle unit is entirely different with a nice smooth almost stock feel but with much higher clamping force and higher temperature material its ideal for upgrades, we do sell a good proportion of 5 paddle one`s though as its half way, between the two for this reason we fit these as a standard part of our manual conversions.

Hope that helps

RPS clutches have been around for ever it seems and have a good rep in the main, from our prospective we see them as a mild clutch as the cover is completely stock Nissan unit painted black and the plate design often means the clutch pedal sweep is insufficient and unless the switches at the top of the pedal are undone and moved back to allow more pedal movement the bite point can be very close to the floor.

Moving the pedal sweep works mechanically fine but can make the clutch pedal rest point higher than the brake pedal which is a niggle I know but suggests there is a slight miss match, maybe a longer slave cylinder actuating rod would help.

I got a clutch from Andrew Page in Boro, really wasn't as expensive as i was expecting, came with a new bearing too. But I agree with Paul and Steams, definitely change the fork and pivot ball and the seal on the back of the box. These are all things i've had to change SINCE doing my clutch.

And if I knew then what I do now I would of got a single piece prop from jeff too.
