ICE

Junior ICE installer here! wink.gif

I installed an active sub over the weekend so had to run a live from the battery, through the inner Emperor Ming above the ECU etc. through to the ar$e end.

Right so now I may need to install an amp for the rear speakers I plan to put in at some point.

Q. Am I correct in thinking that now that I have a live feed from the battery that is it? That now I just distribute other live feeds that I may need from that cable?

TIA Good, Good people! biggrin.gif

Basically Yes, but what gauge wire did you use? if your're gonna have your big system then I wrecken 4 gauge is a must!!

Vijay

Vijay's right, one live feed (and an equally good local earthing point (plenty of options on the boot floor) is all you need.

Only proviso is the current that you can safely draw through the cable without making it hot and causing your zed to go up in smoke. frown.gif

I've got 8AWG running a 2x95w RMS amp in the back and it's cold as ice. If you wanna be really safe or are thinking of running or upgrading to a monster system , run 4AWG cable.

Don't forget that your earth cable needs to be same rating and install an inline fuse in the +ve wire as close to the battery as you can to keep things safe.

Jim

yep Jim's made a good point - don't forget the inline fuse as near to the battery as possible!! I didn't in my 200sx and shit myself when I earthed the power wire by accident.........

Viajy

Thanks guys!

I used an Autoleads Amp install kit from Maplin and it doesn't say anywhere about the core thickness. This should be OK shouldn't it?

Amp will more than likely only be running the front and rear speakers as the sub drives itself.

It comes already fused just off the battery terminal so no worries there.

Timmy, if you look at the writing on the wire, it will have the guage written on the side wink.gif

Cheers Andy I did ask Mrs T to check the cable but she couldn't see owt so I rang Autoleads up. 10AWG Max 420 Normans (Watts for those of you wondering "WTF is he on about?" LOL) so not overly thick! Gulp!

Probably literally just enough to power one amp and no more?

Bummer!

just measured my cable and it's about 10mm thick (including sheathing). It might be worth you re-doing if the interior bitz are still out and then use that 10 gauge stuff that you have to run to the amps from the distributor/fuse block.

Vijay

Oh man not again!

Yeah you're right Vij as it's better to be safe than zedless. biggrin.gif

It won't be such a bitch of a job now I know where the cable enters the bulkhead on the inner wing I suppose.

I'll head off to Maplin tomorrow to buy some decent stuff and then rewire at the weekend.

Existing cable isn't running through the Wallace & Gromet properly anyway so I would have had to pull it anyway.

Cheers for all your help and nifty replies chaps, much appreciated as ever. wink.gif

try and keep the power leads away from the input leads and speaker cable at all times!!!

be a good idea to run your power remote cable from your head unit along with your batt lead on the same side of car!!

hope this is help 2 ya bud!! next time i c ya i'll show u how i wired mine up bud

c ya!!

Ding Ding...round 2...

Right just bought far too much 4 gauge and far too much 8 gauge wire and a two fused 24 carat distribution box from Joe Maplins.

I take it I'll be needing 8 gauge equiv. earth wires aswell?

Right boys and girls my next annoying ICE question...

Q1. What size fuse do I need to put at the battery?

Saw 5G holders which you can screw onto the bulkhead and look cool. But what size amp fuse 20amp, 40amp or 60amp.

Q2. Will be having 4 gauge going into the dist. block and 8 gauge coming out the other side. What size 5G fuses should I have in the distribution block?

TIA MARIA etc. etc.

Love you all as ever and NO I don't do childrens parties! biggrin.gif

Depends on the fused rating of whatever you're running from it - if an amp, it should either tell you in the documentation with the amp, or just add up the total of the fuses on the amp.

Find out what power your amp(s) are ie. 300Watt, and P=VI (from A level physics), thus I (current)= 300/12 (12Volt battery).

Man i love physics! Im also excited bout goin to look at a Z at the weekend!
