Post on here while General not working. 2nd Car Help, please

After 2 years of taking trains into Manchester, I decided I want to start taking my car for a number of reasons.

The trains are packed and I never get to sit down and 45mins of standing up is not a good way to start the day, and they are dangerously packed in the evening.

Many a time I have been stranded at another trian station because with out explination the train ends service there.

They are late and now always on strike.

So I was thinking of getting a cheap runaround just to go Uni and back.

I would take the Z but its about £10 a day in petrol, and out of about a dozen times I have taken it, I have 1 attempt at taking my alloys only 2 nuts holding my wheel on, and an attempted break in smashing the door handle.

Any way.

Does any one have any tips how to go about it. I was thinking of a Metro Diesel there are loads for about £500.

The main problem is insurance. Any tips there. I hear you have to start with 0 NCB, but why? I can only drive one at once. Plus for a 1.5 Metro Diesel I have been quoted £800 FPFT.

Any one got any ideas of what I can do? Could I put my Z on classic insurance if I have a 2nd car? and will insurance companies give a discount for insuraning a 2nd car with them.

Any help please.

The next extreme measure is selling the Z for a naff car which I dont want to do.

My Z is not in the best nick, but better than what I bought it as, its 150,000 miles and I would get next to nothing for it now.

Advice? Experiences? Ideas? Please share

Stuart.

If you are only spending 500.00 on one put it in someone elses name and drive it third party only on your Z insurance.

Dont know if it works but an idea.

That is an idea, but I think that only works if you are fully comp on your own insurance. Im only Third Party Fire and Thieft. They wanted close to £2000 for fully comp and £900 for TPFT.

as above really, not strictly legal, but it works i've been doing it for two years now,

the woman a the insurance company told me to do it that way??just register the car in someone elses name, doesn't matter if they don't have a licence!!but if your honest person?????

try a nova diesel,ax diesel(same engine as metro!) or a peugeot 205 diesel as the insurance is alot cheaper....but if you want the cheapest car to insure it's a fiat panda!!

....Or, make sure the run-around is older than 10 years old and insure it with Firebond under a classic car policy.

eg. I am 27 no No-claims - 1990 Peugeot 405 estate worth £300. Insurance £161 TPFT or £138 TPO.

a big paper round then cos biggrin.gif biggrin.gif biggrin.gif wink.gif

Thats an idea cos. I just went on firebond's site and got a quote for £400 for a Metro Diesel of over 10 years old and I dont think that takes the classic insurance into account either.

Does any one know if A-Plan does classic unsurance? Are there any limitations of having it? Do you have to ask for it or when you get a quote will it goto Classic automatically because its over 10 years old?

Try sweet talking your own insurance company first as they can, at their discretion apply your no claims to both policies, a good way of putting it is that youre surely less of a risk to them in a metro/nova deisel than a z and you cant drive both at once!

The third party extension thing is a bit dodgy as unless you insure the registered keeper on it also you run the risk of parking the car on the road, another car hitting it and the registered keeper gets done for allowing an uninsured vehicle to be left on a public highway. Your alright when your driving but the moment you step out of the car your buggered. You cant even say youre gonna only drive it from one private place to another, as they changed the road traffic act to the road traffic and access act so they could nab boy racers hooning around in car parks even though its private property.

Im thinking of a second car too, as im fed up with putting 50 miles a day on my Z going to work and back 7 days a week. Thought about a 2CV (dont knock em till youve drove one, they are fun!) but you just cant find them anywhere!!

Good luck anyway.

My 200SX is insured with More Than (Fully comp, protected no claims) for about £340, and my 300ZX is insured on a >10yrs old classic policy (Norton Ins.,

Does anyone know if firebond insure jap imports, i had a nightmare getting insurance for my 300zx, ended up paying £1250 fully comp and its not even a turbo
