Hi all - my first posting having been scanning this forum for a few weeks....

 

When cold starting, she fires up OK, idle speed goes high, but as soon as I pull away (i.e. use the accelerator) the car seems to lurch, die, accelerate intermittently - like the mixture is all to pot ! :confused

 

Once the engine is warm the problem disappears. Any ideas ? What should I check first ?

However, I had a sort of similar problem myself when I bought my NA manual recently. It turned out to just be that the fuel filter needed changing. So that might be something to check.

 

However, I'm sure there's a ton of reasons for hesitation when cold, and there should be a FAQ for it somewhere around. I'm guessing it probably isn't the temp sensor, since it idles OK.

 

Anyway, just thought I'd post that, on the offchance it might be at all useful :/ Someone knowledgeable should be along soon....

As said there could be 1000 reasons why its doing that. Most on thier own would so nothing but after a acumilating a number of small issues something like this occurs.

 

Start simple try.

Cleaning Throttle bodies

Change Air Filters

Change Fuel filter

Clean and reset Throttle position sensor

Clean/Replace temperature sensor

 

Just these small things could make a big difference. On thier own you probably wouldnt notice much difference but they all add up.

 

Each one of these are not expensive to do and are not hard. I got a Nissan Fuel Filter for just over £10, the air filters will be about £25, clean the throttle bodies will cost a can of Carb cleaner, temp and throttle position sensor will cost nothing to clean, providing you already have tools, WD-40 and a cloth .

All of the jobs are easy except the air filters. Its not hard to do, its just a git to do it .

Thanks guys. Already cleaned and reset the TPS, but made no difference so I'll get to work on the other bits and see how she goes.

 

 

 

Make sure your coolant level is correct and you have no air locks!! This is related to cleaning your temp sensor (the two wired one - not the single wired temp gauge connector)

 

My car was a bit iffy when warming up, almost stalled whenever I started to accelerate. I reckon it's cos I had low coolant, so it wasn't flowing around the temp sensor - engine was warming up but nobody was telling the ECU that!! Heat took a lot longer to get to the sensor via metal conduction than via coolant. Been ok since I flushed and refilled. Level is still dropping but that's another story....

i also have this problem, and i have just had an engine rebuild, the problem was there before the engine rebuild as well. i have been told to change the temp sensor, probably cos i have replaced just about everything else there is!

Mine has started doing this also. Seems to be getting worse. But also when the accelerator is only just pressed down whilst driving it seems to run ruff. That it why I have to floor it alot (my excuse anyway and i'm sticking to it).
