Brake Judder

Hi I have a problem with my 1990 jspec non-turbo 300zx... please help....

When braking from speed (55+mph), there is a very intense juddering. does anybody know what this can be. and how to fix this. I have had the discs skimmed so i dont think its these.

also when braking hard, sometimes there is a loud crack noise comming from the front, this also accures sometimes when i do hard left/right lock on steering.

also have problem with failing powersteering - put after readeing this forum it seems apparent that its the speed convertor, so im gonna pull that out tomorrow..

does anyone know of a z expert around south london/north surrey area?

any advice welcome.

thanks

The Torsion bushes can cause the car to vibrate under braking. They are rubber bushes about a foot in from the wheels. These bushes leak when they are old and cause play in the torsion bars which can be felt when braking lightly from high speeds.

Does your car make a clunk if you turn sharpy at high speeds?

Stuart

havent noticed, any clunking at high speeds, but then because of the judder ai dont go that quickly any more.

I will check the bushed. do you know i should check them or is it case of just replaceing them and seeing what happens?

do you know where i can get these bushes from and how much they cost?

thanks for your help

Hi, I think you can get the bushes from Grasshopper or the Z centre. About £55 a pair.

It's worth checking if you've got aftermarket ones fitted already, if you have then that probably won't be the problem. The originals are silicon filled rubber, the replacements will prob be hard plastic/polyeurethane although some on this site have fitted Silvia Engineering rose jointed ones (??!)

My car makes dreadful clunking noises when applying the brakes in reverse, I'm assuming this is the Tie bar problem. I've got poly bushes, just no time to fit at the mo' :-(

Cheers!

do you know if these bushes are easy to replace.. is it something i would need a mechanic and workshop for..

thanks

Mick.

Sorry i forgot to mention that one of the symtoms, my Z is suffering is that it pulls to the left, which to me now makes sence as the bushes could be causig this as well.. i think..

Im definatly gonna check the bushes tomorrow

any further advice?

cheers

The removal of the tie bars seems simple enough but the bushes are pressed in and need to be cut out (hacksaw blade from the inside - apprently). The new ones are a PITA to fit too, you need a fly press or similar to squash them into the hole (they're a bit bigger than the hole).

Should transform the handling though...

Cheers!

...had the same judder problem with my NA - replaced a tie rod - still juddering, replaced the disks, still juddering, replaced the (getting thin) nissan pads with green stuff pads, and put the original disks back on and all was smooth - no juddring. Now that the pads are ready to be replaced, the judder is back - so I have it down to the pad thickness - don't ask me why, but when I replace the pads, next month or so, I'll know for sure.

good luck

Jack

you can squash the new bush in with a large bench vice.

I had bad judder problems with my J spec 91 TT. I had the pads replaced and the discs skimmed but still had the problem (also made a loud clunking/clicking type sound when applied) After much messing about I had to change the discs (coz skimming is well dodgy so I have been told - by a brake specialist)and it turned out that one of my calipers was warped!!??!!! Got a new set of calipers from "written off my Z" on this forum, had them fitted this morning and.... no more judder/clunk!!

Loads of people (including me) have had the problem with the tension rod bushes and it makes a huge difference when you replace them.

I had the same and replaced pads, skimmed the disks etc and 2 weeks later it went in for an MOT and failed on the bushes.

Nissan only supply the complete tension rod at £130 each side!

Get the poly bushes from Grasshopper or Z Centre for about £60 the pair.

Had em put on to pass the MOT and as if by magic the judder was gone!

Wish I'd known in the first place.

After skimming a couple of times my expensive disks are nearly worn out frown.gif

A cheapo local garage fitted mine and said they were easy to do.

This is what you are looking for...

They are big solid things - about the size of a tennis ball.

Have a look at Z Centre's site...

I have this problem and I have had new disks and pads but the problem still did not go away.

However, I believe that I have found a way to know whether it is a brake or bush problem.

Drive at about 70 and then press the brakes as if you are coming to a round about but in no particular hurry to slow down. Then, whilst the steering wheel is still juddering, when you reach about 50, press the brakes a lot harder so that a large partion of weight is thrown to the front of the car and you feel the front dip. If the judder goes whilst you are at this stage, you can bet that it is the bushes because they are not being given the ability to move about. If the shaking carries on, start with the brakes. Cheapest component first.

Thats what worked for me anyway and I have had them done so all is smooth for me now. biggrin.gif

some useful info here. i also have this damned judder problem as well. will try Cos's theory out soon and report back.
