Detonation Sensor

When does the ECU check the detonation sensor circuit for error code 34. Sometimes I get it, sometimes not so I need to known if the "not" times are a red herring

Featured Replies

Mine did the same. Try keeping the connector "very" clean, it seams to have done the trick 4 me.

Sounds to me like you've got a problem with either the connector (like Vijay said) or a break in the det sensor harnass, or both. Wouldn't be too worried about it unless it puts the car into safety boost because of it.

The ECU checks the detonation circuit at every start-up. If you look at the ConZult fault reporting screen it will tell you how many start-ups ago the fault was logged.

"May Put The Car Into Safety Boost"??????

What is it designed to do? Perhaps the source of my low power is that I'm always in safety boost. Is there any other way of checking if she is in sfety boost?

afaik, you will be in safety boost if you've had a code 34 until the ecu has been re-set or your ignition key has been turned/started 50 times. It's basically saying it won't be able to tell you your car is detting if the sensor is faulty, so it takes the precaution.

I think the only way to see if your in safety boost is by a "good" boost gauge. Have you tested the detenation sensor circuit?

Have a look at:-http://www.twinturbo.net/ttnetfaq/FAQpages/safetyboost.html

Posidrive - YES this is why your car is slower. The dett sensor connector (well the one you can get to without stripping the engine) is at the back centre of the plenum - there are two mounted next to each other - one is the O2 sensor the other is dett. They are both grey. Check them both cos I can't remember which is which LOL. Make sure the contacts are clean etc. TBH though I reckon the connection problem will be at the dett sensor itself NOT the connector described above...

Thanks Guys,

Looks like the weekend will be spent checking wiring.

If the sensor or its harness are broken, how long should it take a competent mechanic to change it. I know such a guy but he is bloody expensive (although worth it). I've just been tryng to diagnose as much as possible myself to keep the costs down.
