Oil Changes

Can anyone give me the right answer. How often should I change my engine oil. I've got a manual '93 stock J-spec with 52K miles on the clock?

I don't drive like a lunatic, but I love the acceleration!!!!

Hey Nelson, don't be so quick to dismiss 2 stroke technology. The two stroke engine can't be beaten for power density.

500cc GP bikes produce 200+hp. Thats 400+hp per litre!!!

More than any normaly aspirated F1 engine tongue.gif

Primitive indeed rolleyes.gif

Hairsy, if you mixed Castrol R at 16:1 or richer, didn't it increase horsepower??

But the SMELL!!! WOW, that is something else!! biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

I only use the brakes so I can accelerate all over again.

http://bagpuss.swan.ac.uk/dunk300zx/ For awesome car & bike mpegs.

after a lot of money and eventually getting a brand spanking new engine,my garage told me if i used anything but castrol rs they would kick my **** !

that was good enuff for me!

as everyone is talking so 'tech' about oils, can anyone tell me why castrol rs is supposed to be so good?apart from being the most expensive £37 around here

and how much is the shell oil you have talked about?

thanks jason

Jaylox,

I was running in a new crank and was advised not to use top synthetic at first cos its soooo good the surfaces dont bed in properly.

I went onto synthetic after 600miles

Robert, as you say, who cares what it does to performance with a smell like that. I always mixed fresh at the track as I was told it breaks down when mixed. When I'd finished the meeting I'd empty the remaining fuel from the tank into my car - just for the smell !

I can't say I ever noticed a performance difference between different oils but then I don't think I ever did a back to back test on the same day. I think that would have been the only way I could have gauged it. Lap times would vary day to day anyway with different temperatues etc.

Jay, the reason why Castrol RS (or any other decent synthetic oil) is rated so highly is because it's a very good lubricant but, probably more importantly, it has great stability at varying temperatures and does not degrade with use in the same way as a mineral oil.

Nelson may well be able to give other benefits - is heat dissipation better ? I guess that would be something worth manufacturing in if it could be done.

Dave
