car wont start

Help needed if at all poss. I am stumped but it could be something simple. It is a 1990 auto turbo (yes the car is in park mode) but have tried all other modes just in case. Worked fine for a long drive, came back home went out five mins later and nothing.

Batery and everything seem fine, alarm is working correctly but when I turn the key to start nothing happens. I have replaced the relay but the startmotor etc just wont click in. What else could it be?

thanks in advance

Does the car have an immobiliser???

CheerZ,

Andy

Yes it does have an imobaliser but this is working. Normally when the imobaliser is on the electric windows wont work but they are working so I can only assume the immobaliser is off.

Next test is:

Put the headlights on, when you turn the key do the lights dip or stay the same???

CheerZ,

Andy

A CAT2 immobiliser have a 3 point cut off.

Electrics

Starter Motor

Fuel Pump

So it may be the case its not fully disengaging, but I doubt it.

Stuart

Doesn't mater how many times you say it Jay wink.gif If the engine won't turn over it deffo aint the PTU - if the PTU had gone then the engine would crank on the starter but not start...

CheerZ,

Andy

Checked the headlights last night, they don't seem to dip at all although my friend recond they did very slightly. What can this be. If they did dip it was not obvious to me.

Tim

Andy may have a different path, but here is mine

If the starter was using any power the headlights should dip. The lack of dippage is a sign that no power is going to the starter.

I wonder if you could disconnect or over ride the immobilizer to test without it? Im not sure about the insurance or practicallity issues of doig this?

hehe,i'll put my reeding glasses on next time andy.

sorry m8 thought you said it wouldnt turn over???

have you checked the fuses in the small fuse box(4-5 fuses)?

i had a similar problem and a fuse had blown on mine, its the fusebox in the corner of the engine bay (the 1 nearest the side(large fuse),drivers side near the windscreen!

or do i need my glasses again?

Might sound a bit silly and all, but I had the same exact problem with mine too. I unlocked all the doors with the key (locked and unlocked) and rolled the car 5 feet backwards. Somewhere within that process it cleared up whatever problem that was happening. I know its not a technical fix, but it hasn't happened since.

Thanks guyz will try all of your suggestions tonight and see what happens. Its just anoying because the car had been running absolutly fine and then when I stopped it would not restart.

Tim

Yes bruce exactly what I was thinking. Jay, another good point - check those fuses - drivers side, attached to suspension turret on the back of it.

If all these fail to give results, find the starter on the side of the gearbox, find a lump hammer, find a piece of wood, put wood against starter, hit wood with hammer wink.gif There is a slight possibility that the starter is just stuck in a funny position...

Give it a try wink.gif

This sounds just like the most stupid problem ever that I had.

After messing with the electrics I came to start the car and it was like yours - completely dead.

After tracing every sodding wire in the car it turned out to be the starter inhibitor circuit doing it's job on the auto shifter.

It was in park but wouldn't start - moved it through the gears and back and it started up first time! Doh! The switch must have not quite engaged but it was the last thing I thought of.

Wasted a whole day on that one.

Inhibitor switch, stops the car starting when in gear. If it`s knackerd then car won`t start.

Cat2 immobilisers only need 2 circuits to satisfy the insurance. Most are 2 cuts but if you have a 3 circuit one then bypassing one will not make it invalid.

  • 2 weeks later...

Tried everything you guyZ have said but to no avail. I tried rolling the car backwards in gear so to move the engine and starter motor if for some reason they were 'stuck'. When I tried to restart the engine I had a different liht on my dashboard. It looked like an exhaust pipe with some steam coming off it. Any ideas, I go on my hols tommorow and would like to try to fix it before I go.

Thanks for any help.
