Strange notchy steering

Well car was fine yesterday, today strange notchy steering like it keeps getting snagged on something when turning, checked the PS pot and the correct amount of fluid is in there, checked the tyre pressure and although my passenger side was slightly lower than the drivers side, pumped it up and still the same, could this be related to the steering arms and my mysterious clunk i have at low speed?

Check your speedo upto 20mph is it working all the time as your power steering is directly influenced by the speed sensor and if this starts to fail you get intermittant power steering issues.

Mine suffered from this untill i changed the speed sensor

i actually forgot about that, doesn't seem to be that though speed o was working fine today, its started doing the Prrr prrrrr prrrr sound again on idle as well, like its slightly missing every now an then, i cured that last time by switching to a S2 PTU but now seems to be back, strange it happened around the same time the steering has gone notchy, and i get slight engine hunt when i come off the acceleration to pull up to a stop.

ooh cars a 1991 UK spec TT auto.

And just when i sent you a PM saying that it hadnt done anything silly in a while  bloody typical.

lol still sounds like your speedo sensor mate, same symptoms as mine had

best rip the other one off the gearbox in the garage then, unless you cant change the speed sensor in a auto lol

Could it be the uj gone dry? And where are your ptu wires? Mine managed to find ots way to the alternator belt and rubbed through and caused a short.

doubt its the UJ, last time i looked at that, it was caked in a healthy dose of axel grease, ive moved the PTU to near the battery so no chance of it rubbing the alternator belt lol. i did check them though as i had to solder in the connectors as i didnt have a sub harness to go from the old one to the new one.

Changed my power steering fluid and made a mistake in puting power steer oil in instead of auto transmission fluid witch made my steering feel notchy changed the oil back to auto trans.oil and fixed the problem .

Ok quick update, seems i have something leaking from the dust boot on the drivers side steering arm as it goes into the power steering actuator (think that what its called)

Guess i need to find out if its the arm or the actuator that leaking. but its definitely not the speed sensor on the gearbox, as my gear changing is working fine and so is my speed O.

Has anyone changed the actuator and if so, what do i need to know? looks like it could be a PITA to get to while the engine is in.

Maybe your rack oil seals are leaking bud. The manual covers how to strip down and replace but it looks like you will need to get the rack off the car to do it :( Unless of course you can pull the drivers side arm with it still in that is..

You might be easier replacing the whole rack.

thing is, is it the rack or is it the end joins like what i had go on the rear hicas on my red one, might explain my clunking ive been suffering with and there is a lot of play left to right movement on the front wheel on the drivers side. so i think it might actually be the square nut area on the front tie rod, aaargh hard to explain.

Its not leaking as in dripping on the floor, but it is noticably oily looking.

I know what your saying bud. The rack seals should be stopping the fluid getting past them, therefore any fluid at the nut must have gone through the seal. The more I think about it it has to be a failed seal or the o ring on the actual rack arm. Can't see any other way for fluid to be appearing in the boot.

i know what your saying, but had the same thing on the rear hicas, that also had what looked like a leak but wasnt the rear rack that was leaking, i suppose the only way to really know would be to get the damn thing off the car :(

well, looks like ill have to change the front tie rods then, just spoke to jamie at zedworld and at least its not as bad a job as the rear hicas arms.
