I've got a weird tappety like ticking sound that seems to be coming from the back of the engine. The noise goes away above 2k rpm but is quite loud below this.

I was thinking that it might be a problem with the vvt springs, but that's just a guess at the moment.

Anybody have any ideas? Being a bit of a tight git I haven't any way of recording the noise

Very easy fix matey, get some millers lifter treatment and a nice run........ Then it should be gone. Easily found on ebay.......

I've already put some in mate, not really helped :( I do agree about the good run though. Problem is that the engine hasn't really been used much since Jan 2009 as the cars been getting rebuilt, so was sort of expecting a tappet like noise for while. A good run would help it out a great deal as apart from that everything else is sweet.

I'm not really worried about it but was just wondering if I should change the VVT springs any way?

If you are in the middle of rebuilding, then yes...... if not, like me; Then more lifter treatment.......lol.

when my VVT springs went it sounded like an old diesel around 2-3k revs but not below or above that range.

Doesn't sound anything like that, must be lifters then.......

Just about finished doing the zed. lol Think I will just chuck some more lifter treatment in when it's on the road and see what happens :)

Cheers

They will rattle on idle and should go at higher revs, obviously the revolution of the cam at a faster speed will be harder to hear and the noise would be gone when the vvt comes in, depending on how the ecu is set up for this to happen. I have quite an aggressive chip, so mine doesnt come in till about 6k revs, which is a bit high really.
