I think me water pump has gone! can anyone confirm

Just crusin round Heathrow airport when my 300 suddenly developed a deathly squeal. When i checked under the bonnet, the fan seemed at a funny angle, causing it to collide with the belts and me coolant was gushing on to the floor! Is this the water pump? if not, answers on a postcard please! could it have caused any damage to the engine! and finally, do all 300's look as mean as mine on the back of a recovery truck!!!!!!!!!!Had the car 2 weeks and on first name terms wiv most AA employees

Had mine on the back of one once, but dont the RAC know how close to the ground cars are, WHY did they send out a pick up truck first, i mean come on, its not an Escort, even the name, Nissan 300 zx Twin Turbo, does not sound like your miles from the ground family 2.4 children saloon

Can you unhook the waterpump belt?

Does the fan turn?

It sounds like the Water Pump has gone, but long distance diagnosis is a tad tricky. From what you've described I'd say the bearing has collapsed.

Where are you from m8?

Tim

Based in Windsor. havnt tried to unhook the water pump belt yet( I'm a bit of a novice wiv these cars at the moment). Fan will rotate clockwise but not anti clockwise? But fan definatly at a funny angle and fan blades are scored where they have rubbed against something (not sure wot). I think you could be right with your diagnosis. How bad is bearing collapse?? Thanx for all help recieved

What's your name m8, I can't call you your Reg number? smile.gif

If the bearing has collapsed then it needs the Cambelt cover removing and the pump replacing, did you 'cook' or overheat the car?

How many miles has the car done? I only ask because if it hasn't had a cambelt change recently it might be worth doing at the same time. I can't remember the exact figure but the Water Pump is about £65.

For labour you can budget £150-200.

If you change the cambelt and other odds and sods the labour will be about the same but the parts will be about £200 from CourtesyNissan in the US (Water pump included).

Don't run the car if there's no coolant in it.

Nice one Tim, My name is Mark (i suppose A2XGO is a bit of a odd name!!) Me car is an import so as long as it hasn't been tampered with its done 112000KM. It didnt overheat today because as soon as I heard the squeal I pulled over and shut the car off. But it has overheated twice last week (i was slowly loosing coolant and didnt realise, guess it was from the water pump!!). I'm planning to book it in with Jeff at zedworld so it can have a good service and so someone who knows about these cars can have a good look and see if its ok. So i'll get him to sort out the pump etc as I was gonna get the belts changed as a precaution. Only trouble is I wont be driving it up to Tamworth now!! guess i'll start pushing. Thanx for all your advice. I cant believe how helpful people on this site are. looking foward to seeing some of you z heads at a meet sometime, if me motor's feeling better.

I had the squeeling fanbelt last week and find one of the bypass hoses to the cylinder heads is leaking. Just changed the pair last night. Thought my water pump had gone but it seems to have been the hose. Guess it is the higher pressure everything is taking with the warmer weather.

Willie

Hi Mark,

sounds like the water pump to me. Had the same thing happen three weeks after buying the car (9 yrs old, 45,000m J manual).

Same squeal, same fan off angle, same green stuff widdling out of the bottom.

Luckily it was as I was pulling in to the pub car park!

Leigh has a bloke round Reading way he swears by so might be worth giving him a ring.

Thanks for the replies Willie and Gio. Question to Gio, when your waterpump went and your fan was at funny angle, was it just pump that caused funny angle or did something else go as well? Just trying to get me head round the whole broken pump - funny fan angle thing.

Thanks Mark
