Tyres...

OK, I asked about tyres a little while ago but can't remember what was suggested. Can't be arsed to do a search so I'm asking again!. I am now in a position to buy some tyres after finding a little 'bubble' on one of my front tyres so will be off to micheldever tommorow lunchtime to change them.

Question is then, what is a good all round tyre?. Dont really use the car in the wet unless I have to so whats good then.

Cheers

I had S02's on the rear of mine, and I have changed them to Falken's.

The S02, now on S03 are the best of the best. They will set you back £130-£150 for one rear one.

I noticed a difference straight away. Running mostly stock, only exhause and induction, I could put my foot to the floor all the way to 6500rpm in the wet and they still held.

I went for Falken this time becuase of money problems. I found them to be very good too. Can hold a good pull off and holds well round the corners, but a quick left right, the tyres lose a little grip when changing directions quickly. Im not saying it slides loads, but it feels like the tyre flexed slighly before settling.

In the wet they start to slip at 4000rpm in 2nd with the foot to the floor. But I dont think that is a sign of the Falkens being bad, I think that is a sign of how good the Bridgestone S02/S03's are in the wet and dry.

I think that you will find Tyres-sold-online have now gone pop (from what has been said on this forum).

You might try: http://www.xpediatyre.co.uk/mailorder.html

I'm looking at buying some of the new Eagle F1s through them and have been quoted: For 4 is £411.05 inc. VAT and carriage.

But since you'll already have had yours fitted this is a little academic lol

Anyone no if Monza tyres are any good?

I went from Michelin (poor) to Pirelli (bad) to Toyo Proxes T1-S (superb).

http://www.micheldever.co.uk/ are very cheap or Elmbridge Tyre Services (Derbys) if you are in the Midlands.

Have P6000's all round at the mo, they have lasted over a year though (only done 4k miles last year), so they last well being hard compound but are very bad for cornering. The zed just slides everywhere!. One of my front ones has a nasty bubble/blister appearing so has to be done immediately!. Micheldever is about 15-20 from me now. Not sure if I want to risk driving that far but nowhere around here seems to have any decent tyres on the shelf?.

Will post later what I end up with today.

Just had some S03's (225/50/16) put on the front, came to just over £200 which I thought was 'reasonable'. The front end definitely felt lighter and more responsive so hopefully have made a good choice there?.

One thing that was mentioned to me though, was at the moment - I have 225's on the back (from previous owner) wheels on a 50 mm profile. One of the guys there said that the rear tyres should be on a 45mm profile with a 245 width (OK, no problem), and could possibly invalidate my insurance if I had an accident?. I thought mmmm, is that true or does he just want me to buy some more tyres and make even more money out of me?.

Any ideas?.

Cheers

Tony.

If you have an import then the standard tyres are the same size front and rear, unless someone has put UK spec wheels on it.

If you have a UK model then I guess you have the wrong wheels. the really easy way to tell whether the rears are different (apart from the part number) is that there are reinforcing lumps in the casting that are visible through the holes.

Had some SO3's put onto the front and what a difference!. The car feels 'lighter' and more sure footed at the front than before so I think I made a good choice there.

I paid just over £200 for the both of them, which I thought was a 'fair' price.

That's strange, my S03's were only £189 for the pair (225/50 ZR16). Was that price from Micheldever?

You'll also find that the S03s seem pretty poor to start with (I guess this is to do with the tread depth). Noticeably a lot more slidey than worn down ones. The first 1000 miles seems the worst, then they seem to get better and better. They even seem good in the wet when at the legal limit. It may be worth saving a pair you're about to get changed if you're ever considering a track day or visit to the pod

Dylan, I didn't go to micheldever in the end, the bulge in my tyre was looking a bit dangerous so I went to place in Hedge End near southampton. Havent really had much chance to 'play' and test them, but from the start they were much better than the P6000's that were on there before!.

IIRC S-02's and S-03's have a compund that gets softer as the tyres wear down. This is supposed to make them 'feel' the same throughout their lifespan and probably explains why the last couple of mm disappears very quickly.

I didn't know that, that would explain why they're so grippy near the end of their life - only 9000 miles to go until mine get grippy again then frown.gif
