Coilover question

Absolutely gutted so hoe somebody knows better..

Bought a set of BC coilovers from Coolq in January. Apparently nearly new so paid £300 for them. Just been to have them adjusted and set properly as the wheels are catching and told that the bottom plates are ceased. They will need to be sent off, plates cut off and new ones put on.. probably costing me a couple of hundred quid.. gutted doesnt come in to it.. MOT due this week a well and car drives like a pup....

Anybody any thoughts on how I can sort them without costing a fortune? should have waited till the end of this year and bought a new set I know..

is it the front or rear coilovers that are buggered mate?

I've got some OEM shocks that you can have or if you want to borrow some coilovers, maybe it'd be possible to modify the GTR HKS coilovers that I've got in the shed, just as a temporary measure to get you through the MOT

Cheers Pez. backs look the worst.. The garage are well into zeds so will buy a cheap set of oem shocks to get me through, ill get them swapped over this weekend in the rain..

gutted though as I try and buy new so problems like this can be negated. Only bought them as short of cash after starting new job.. serves me right..

Im going to try and repair when I get them off... any tips welcome....

can you not soak them in brake fluid to help release them. im sure once they are off the car they would be easy to free up :)

I've just had a quick look at your other thread bud

I've opted for 18" x 10" wide CV Pros (one piece rather than split rims) on the rear of my shortie. They sit flush to the rear arch with no requirement for spacers, however pre-empting possible catching issues if I were to use 265/275 tyres, I've now opted for narrower 245/40/18 tyres on the rear and will just adjust tyre pressures as appropriate for grip.

Do you think that rolling the rear arches slightly or going for slightly narrower tyres might help on the rear mate?

245s on a 10" rim is seriously under the recommeded mimimum 265's

Seriously is such a scary word!

I had a chat with the guys down at John Woods in Hereford yesterday when I dropped the rims off and explained the situation, we've agreed to try it and see. With an aspect ratio of 40 rather 30/35 it should be fine.....

Here's an example of a 245 tyre on a 10" wheel

ive never understood rolling the arches? the fronts catch mainly when the wheels are slightly turned and you hit a bump so need to sort the ride height definately.. I did think about taking the spacers off, but think they will still catch.. I love the wheels and love the stance.. who do I talk to about rolling the arches and what sort of cost would I be looking at?

Sure your right about about the sizes on the Lexus? i had 265's on my 10" and they were more stretched than that and gave an awfull ride.

Also whats the point in going for a narrower tyre and increaseing the ratio dosnt this increase the width fo the tyre again??

I always thought that the aspect ratio made reference to the side wall height as a percentage of tread width (ie. aspect ratio of 40 = tyre wall height @ 40% of tyre width (in this case 245mm)

Could be wrong though.

I must have a CV Pro fettish or something, I've bought a load more since I sold the last lot and have them stored above the garage (and this is only half of them!)

If you want to pop over and see if any of these fit better you're welcome to, it might be possible to swap parts over in order to make a better fitting set (ie. change the inner rim etc)???

Not sure mate. i may have it wrong aswell lol!!!

Notice how the 1st posts are about safty. like i said my ride was amazing with the old alloys on (275 on 9.5) and i put my new wheels on that had 265s on a 10 and the ride became dangerous and unpridictable. kind of like the back end was going to come around and topple over. Had to explain but it was awfull.

I was also going to mention that differant tyre brands have differant style walls so his may not look to stretched and mine were. just going off experiance.

I'll pop down on Tuesday to collect the rims and if it looks dodgy I'll get them to swap them for wider. I believe brand and type make a big difference, but I wouldn't know for sure if I'm honest, what works and what doesn't.

All I know from experience are that 888's are great for Summer but shit in the Winter, P Zero's are fantastic but wear down rediculously quick and Falkens are a goody happy medium.

The 245's that I've asked the guys to fit are a pair of Bridgestone Potenza's that I had lying around in the garage, so figured I'd give them a try....we'll see, they might be terrible??

Thanks for the offer Pez.. Ill have a play first and see how I get on..

How do they roll the arches.. not sure what this is??

  • Author

So it basically gets rid of the lip inside the wheel arch.. how do you then screw the inner liner on?

That would definateley help.. anybidy else done this? and can advise what other alterations need to follow?

got to be carefull doing this. i have seen many cars look a right mess after it has been done. cracked paint and ripples on the face of the arches etc :(

Looks like Falcon Performance ripped me off... An hour and a half to free them all off, all plates fully moving.. loads of copper slip..

Just need a garage I can trust to set them up now...

Really chuffed......

That's good news mate, see if you can find somewhere with a Hunter system to carry out a full 4 wheel alignment...

and as for arch rolling, I've just done mine with a 4lbs mallet and the palm of my hand and it's worked a treat bud. I did a trial run on my old red scrapper and then commited to the SWB once I was happy with the technique (I'll get pics up when the weather clears up a bit)

I watched this youtube video that I found on DW and thought that I'd give it a go myself

now that the rolling is done, the next step is to use one of the roll cage bars that hasn't been welded in yet, to create the flare that I need. If it go's wrong it go's wrong....I'll fix it with a bigger hammer!

just for reference this is what a 245 tyre looks like on a 10" wide rim, perfectly fine in my opinion

And here is what mine looked like not even touching the rim with a 265 tyre :nono:

if I tried to run a 265 on the rear as it currently stands, with a gap of approx 10mm (arch rolled or not), there's a good chance that the edge of the tyre would catch the arch lip everytime it went over a speed bump

10" rim with an offset of +45 = rim lip sitting a few mm outside of the arch hence slightly narrower 245 tyre in order to be legal

offsets are obviously different
