New Member, New Owner, First Service!

Hi all,

need some help advice, coming up to my first service on my ZX (well, that's been done by me) so it's going to have an oil change and filters etc.

What do the rest of you recommend for Oil, filters and parts, what do you check and carry out when servicing, any probs I should look out for... what do I do?! smile.gif

cheers

Oil full synthetic 4 litres - I use Castrol RS 0-40 but the Nissan history on my car says its had part synthetic all its life until me and there's been no engine problems so far now well past 100k! Oil filters from Nissan - about £6 retail. Mind your £1.10 copper sump plug washer!

hi nix,

just my advice if you can afford to get everything done plugs, filters, oil, timing belt!!!,change gearbox oil and diff oil, change brake fluid and clutch fluid.

If nothing else then you know its all been done and hopefully no probs will arise,

ok its just my advice but if you are keeping the car for a long time its worth every penny!!!!

Every time that I have bought a Z ( 4 so far)I have changed the timing belt and while stripped the water pump. Also changed all fluids i.e. Gearbox oil, diff, brake fluid, flush rad.

Nix, how many miles has the car done? What age is the car? These are both factors to consider for the good old timing belt etc. Where abouts are you? If its your first, a helping hand certainly wouldn't go amiss wink.gif

CheerZ,

Andy

Cheers Andy,

probably could do with a hand.. the car's done about 80k miles (will check later!), it's a 1990 H plate, newly imported 5 months ago.. got full service history, nissan as well.. trouble is it's all in Japanese, which doesn't help!

How much would the works cost, including timing belt?

and before I rush out and buy it so it's ready.. does everybody agree with Willi0 about the Castrol Fully Synth?

we use Mobil Super S, a semi synthetic oil at work, some customers with more money than sense insist on putting mobil 1 in, bit its not really worth the extra wonga IMO. especially if your gonna do a change every 3000 miles as most seem too!!

Anyone know how often the gearbox should be changed on a manual.

Defo get the cambelt changed tho properly.

I use a trade oil, Morris 10/50 fully synth, developed for turbo engines. Not exactly cheap at £25 for 5 litres, but it still meets/exceeds all the specs (like the others do!) and I change it every 3000 anyway. Most important point is, turbo motor - fully synth oil.

still dont agree that you need a fully synthetic oil. save your money & use semi synthetic!!! regular oil changes is more important & like i said, if you change at 3000 miles you will never get the benifits of mobil1, its designed to last like 20K miles+ !!!

heres the spec sheet for Mobil Super S:

The Mobil Super S is an extra high performance synthetic technology motor oil designed to provide outstanding protection for the engines of all gasoline and diesel-powered passenger cars, light trucks and vans. Mobil Super S is particularly suitable for high performance engines especially those fitted with turbochargers. This extra high performance product is formulated from a unique blend of synthetic hydrocarbons and highly refined mineral oils and a superior additive system to provide exceptional overall engine cleanliness and protection against wear at high temperatures and under severe operating conditions. Excellent low temperature fluidity ensures easy starting in cold weather conditions and low volatility contributes to low oil consumption.

Specifications

Mobil Super S meets the requirements of the following specifications:

API SJ / CF, service classifications

ACEA A3-96 / B3-96

Mercedes Benz 229.1

JASO Valve Train Wear Test

Mobil Super S exceeds the engine oil performance recommendations of major car manufacturers.

Benefits

The combination of very high quality synthetic hydrocarbons, mineral oils and advanced additive technology ensures that Mobil Super S offer performance benefits which are superior to those obtainable with conventional mineral motor oils. These benefits include the following:

Outstanding engine cleanliness and anti-wear properties leading to longer engine life

Easier starting at low temperatures

Excellent high temperature properties

Low oil consumption

Turbo-proven dependability

Well I guess that anyone who reads and believes the ads on oil will never agree on this LOL. Anyway, my reason for thinking that fully synth is more appropriate for turbos is that I belive it's high temp properties are better. In other words its less likely to get baked onto the turbo shafts are wreck the seals.

The bottom line is the no road car should push a decent oil to it's limits (except for longevity) and therefore it doesn't matter too much as long as you change it regularly and more regularly if you do lots of short journeys. Stick with whatever makes you feel happy but don't go too thick or too thin.

Peace smile.gif

i also got the info from Mobil themselves who told me that fully synth just isnt worth it unless your doing huge amounts of miles between services.

most people who use mobil 1 swear by it & will never use anything else. fine!

but in my experience ( iv been in the motor trade all my life & use mobil products every day) semi synth is MORE than adequate.

dont want to tread on anyones tootsies on this - just passing on my experience smile.gif
