Noisey Tappets

I recently had the engine out and it stood on end in the workshop for a couple of weeks.

Now that its back in, its got one noisey hydraulic lifter.

Looking in the manual it says you should always keep the tappets the right way up when you remove them otherwise air gets in and they go noisey.

Do you think this could have happened to mine while the engine was stood on end?

And how the hell can I purge the air out of it without having to strip it back to the cams????

Cheers in advance

ZHead.

Its a common problem - but the noise usually goes once the engine is run I take it you put fresh oil back in? Have you run the engine for a while to give the oil chance to circulate back in to the lifters?

Yep - it had new oil - and then another oil change!

Still no improvement.

A dodgy injector can sound like a dodgy lifter.

If you want to check it, disconnect the injector. If it's the injector making the noise then the ticking will stop. If it's a hydraulic lifter then the noise will remain.

It's a difficult test because the engine will sound different with the misfire but it should work.
