2.5 hours to change a rear wheel bearing...

well chuffed, got a brand new offside rear wheel bearing of a guy from ebay that had it as spare.

having checked all the bushes which were fine, the only issue was the hicas ball joint, replaced it, but the wheel still moved side to side, dreading doing the bearing ive been searching for a complete hub. And from reading posts about how difficult it is and how long it takes.

So while the other half is out for the day and the weather is sunny on the south coast.

Off i go, removed brakes, disc, shoes, undid the drift shaft nut, which was easy. all the bushes, hub was off in less than an hour.

Now the fun begins. the bearing and carrier are super tight. into a vice it goes, and clamp on a puller. tighten it up to the point of the puller snapping, leave it, and place my plumbers blow torch on the vice and heat it up. whilst its doing this i go and make a coffee. couple of mins later i come out to find the blow torch still going, but the bearing has fallen out of the carrier.

Result......

now with new bearing ready, a bit of copper grease on the carrier, back in the vice and tap it home. Put it all back together tighten everything back up. rebuild and adjust the rear shoes. wheel back on and no movement at all. all nice and solid.

So well chuffed, not only have installed a brand new bearing, and got the handbrake working perfectly, from off to 5 clicks up, both wheels lock good.

Not bad for 2 and half hours, and the bearing only cost me £20.

the first side on mine took 3 hours and that was including waiting for a mate to bring me a big enough socket for the driveshaft!

the drivers side took me over 7 hnours!! the driveshaft was siezed in the hub!! had to remove drive shaft and took it to work, even the press at work wouldnt shift it, ended up asking a mate at a garage to lend me his special driveshaft hub pulley, took an hour of tightening and beating with a club hammer to get the b'stard out!!!

well done bud :) you did well
