any recommendations, not really ventured into that side of things before. Looking for something to tow trailor + slicktop to events without hassle

Needs to be comfortable so I can take family with me and for other occasions, decent size boot for spare set of tires, tools etc

Currently looking at Jeep Grand Cherokee's as they seem inexpensive for what they are.

Thoughts?

I was gonna say a Cherokee you can get the 4.0 v8 for under 4k and I'd bet that'd pull anything you wanted it to!!

used my hilux and discovery no problems and as a thought I used my Traffic van towing my slicky many times and if you get a crew cab one you can buy it and run it through the business ....van with comfort and 5 seats 44mpg... lowest I ever got was 37mpg towing at 85mph with my lwb tt from barnsley to shaftesbury

Kia Sorento has won the caravan towcar awards a few times and cheap to buy..

I tow with a 2001 ML 270.. never falters but heavy on the juice and expensive for parts..

I've had a Jeep Cherokee (old shape 2001) for the last 7 years and frankly its probably been the most reliable car I've ever had. Its a straight 6 4.0L so even on LPG its not exactly ecomomical but its made up for it in repair costs (or lack of them). Worst problem I've had is the fuel pump went and it was £300 for another one. Other than that I've driven it 100,000 miles and its had a battery, 2 tyres, radiator, alternator, some brake pads and a couple of UJ's for the drive shafts. Great in snow and tows car and trailer well.

P38 Range Rover 2.5TD. A MUCH nicer 4x4 to drive than any of its era, and its adjustable pneumatic height suspension makes hooking up trailers a breeze, and the Bmw Diesel engine has plenty of grunt for towing.

If your towing a Z i'd say an older Range rover as Yowesr says...I've had a Merc E320 for a few months now and not towed anything yet, but plenty of grunt and loads of family room, leather big boot with Dog rack and under floor storage for tools (some have 7 seats and use this as the foot are for back 2 seats). Manuals are rare, but prices are cheap for high milers if you can find a nice one. They have timing chain so good for 300+k if you look after them, but avoid 98-late 2001 where merc imported steel from Russia and had arch rusting issues...

thanks for all the feedback - leaning between the P38 and the Jeep at the moment.

What are the views on using a big estate eg a6 avant or something similar?
