Fu*ked Third Gear

Gutted, just got car back after 7 weeks off the road waiting for clutch, all fitted to now find third gear is bollocked.

When changing from second to third it crunches and wont go in, if I wait a second or two it goes in without too much effort.

So what are my options guys, rebuild on the gearbox, second hand one?

Thoughts please

Besides this its great to be back smile.gif

Try Redline MT-90 gearbox oil.

Its very good, nice, shiny, flowery, pleasant, non argumentative oil.

is your clutch fluid ect all well bled? Are you not having trouble in any other gears? Could be a bearing.

Cheers Glen, Warren.

Will get that Redline in straight away, hopefully that will sort.

Its only in third, all other gears are fine, no problems at all. The guys at the garage did a good job and the AP clutch engages really well, no judder, very pleased.

I think running my old clutch into the ground might have caused it, cos third worked properly (no slip after it had been slipping for the previous month) just before the old clutch died.

The synchros do tend to gum up a bit when not used for a while. The box I bought secondhand was 'kin awful when it first went in (after sitting around for a couple of months), but after replacing standard oil with Redline and driving it more it got to the stage where it only crunches under fast changes. It's no panacea but it makes it drivable until you have time/money for a rebuild.

Is it fuck! smile.gif biggrin.gif

I had the same 3rd gear prob (different gearbox mind, S13) but it sorted it out a treat, no evidence what so ever left of it being dodgy after MT-90.

Takes a few miles (30 or so) for it to get in to all the nooks and crannies though. wasn't impressed when I first put it in, but a couple of zings around and it sorted itself out.
