Hi guys

I seem to be getting a lot of steam coming from the rear of the engine on the passenger side

cant seem to pin point where its coming from. Ive shone the torch down there and it seems to be

around the turbo area but still cant see any leaks, it doesnt smell like oil theirs no sign of

a leak under the car either so im assuming the leak doesnt start until the car gets warm.

Im fairly sure its a water leak as the water in the radiator seemed to be quite low.

any help and suggestions greatly appreciated

Cheers

Si

check the water pipes going through the bulkhead to the heater matrix, usual culprit. When engine is hot it will come out as steam, but due to heat of engine will be hard to spot.

get your self a bottle of Forte coolant conditioner, It turns your collant neon green, great for finding water leaks.

Thats a handy tip. have some Rep

If its not the turbo and comming from the passenger side i would say its under the plenum :(

N/s Turbo water feed.....................

+1 from the description I'd bet on this may just be a clip

That is loose but its a pain to get to and change anyway. With it running you will see it leaking from underneath

Happened with mine, try to avoid driving it because if it hits red on the temp gauge say goodbye to your head gaskets, as i learnt keeping the water topped up didnt work... in my case the metal pipes from heater to engine were rusted out, it can also be the water cooling lines for the throttle body these are expensive to replace and easy to delete... your choice really, i took the bonnet off and managed to pull the old pipes with the plenum on. if you want to do the throttle body bypass you're going to have to do a plenum pull.

Thanks for all your comments

Steam defo seems to be starting lower than the plenum and comin up the side/corner of the engine

there is about 2 small joining pipes at the back of the engine that comes from the top main pipe down to the passenger turbo ..

all most center of the engine

it will be one of these

will take a pick later as i have my engine out the car right now ...

Wow thanks alot mate I've been looking all over for a pic like that. But how the F@ck do you get to those lol

Im thinkin it's the lower one but if I can it might be worth changing what I can.

Any idea what the inside diameter is on those pipes?

Thanks again mate well appreciated

top pipe can be got at if you remove the upper matrix water pipes and the metal one with 2 bolts ..

as the lower one

remove the exhaust on that side

u need to undo the center bearing & box mount ...drop the back of the box down ...

should just give u enough clearance

but Prob be better instead of fighting with the bottom upper pipe clip just run a new Feed like i did ...

Sounds like a ball ache for your average tinkerer, dont think I have the facilities to be faffing takin the exhaust off. looks like im gonna have to find a decent trustworthy garage... not found many of those in Sheffield unfortunatley lol

Don't think I'd make it mate, when it first happened I'd was barely able to drive more than a couple of hours before steam was pluming out the bonnet around the battery area.

Hi again, I thought id got this problem sorted, after tightening the water hose clips on the passenger side turbo, but seems to have started again but more to the centre of the engine as Markderby shows in his pic.

thing is it definatley only leaks once the engine is switched off and sounds a bit strange but I think the amount it leaks seems to vary on how hard the cars been driven... is this due to pressure?

Im assuming its impossible to reach theses pipe other than from underneath the engine... anyone in or around sheffield with a pit or a ramp who could help??

cheers

Si
