On my car I have aftermarket 17" alloys with 225 45 17 tyres which are all knackered. I like the rims and planned to replace tyres with goodyear eagle f1's or Michelin pilot sports or something like that, but now I wonder are the rims and tyres too skinny and should I be looking at a wider rim and tyre set up. Why do owners go for a wider tyre set up, surely you would think that Nissan would have designed it with the super icas to give optimum handling?

With modern tyres and wheels one of the best compromises is 18" X 8.5 front with 235/40 18"s and on the rear 18" X 10.5 with 265/35 18"s. It looks so right with these. The rims dont look out of place and the ride and handling are still very good whereas 19" or 20" can look just too big and ruin the ride. They also have very short tyre life due to the suspension geometry not being designed for such low profile tyres. The inside edges tend to get killed early. You will get many other opinions though.
