Right as you may of seen lately over the last 3 weeks i have been writing websites and have now just completed my forth one in this period "i used to do it years before btw!", anyway i just started tonight for a photgraphy website, baught them there domain set up hosting on my server and they asked for a holding "under construction" page while i work on there website,

anyway to cut short i did this:

http://www.laurajaynephotography.com/

Should be fine for now most sites have a picture of a digger!, and thought this was better than nothing, so i droped him a text said done your holding temp page while i work on your website, and received a reply saying "this is not professional enough" for a holding page that will last less than a week!,

Im starting to think already is this job even worth it!, and this was the image they sent me how she wants her website, and i must follow it exactly, so ok im fine with that!

then i got this image

website.jpg

Im just starting to think 1st is this worth it?, and second i know it her design but were not in the 90's anymore i want to be proud of my work and given how she wants im not sure!,

Would appreciate your opinions thanks chris

Yours is way better Chris......

.....but then the customer is always right, so they tell us. Even when they are blatantly wrong, stupid, obstinate, misinformed; the customer is still right......

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

Tell them to do one mate! There's no need for abuse like that.

Rose and I used to put up with this, now we just refuse to work for people like that. Simple ethos - You're either paying me to do it because I'm the expert or you're not - Simples!

We both just read that and said in very high pitched voices "PSYCHOOOOOOOOO!"

Dump the client now, by the looks the photography isn't that good anyway and by the time you're done 'dumbing it down' enough for her 'taste' you won't want it in your portfolio.

Dirty girl !

Agreed, yours is better. I would be worried too......its a sign of whats to come when designing the actual site for them. They have no comprehension of how much time and effort is involved in webdesign and will turn out to be far more trouble than its worth with constant emails to change this and that.

Either pull out now, or increase your prices and make sure every detail is in writing before you do any work for them.

Heres a list of some of the sites ive done so far a few i did about 3 years ago have gone bust now so.. if anyones interested

yeh, it was in my rides......rides is gone :( I'll fix it eventually.

Well i will speak with them tmrw i am only charging £60 for websites anyways so.. well see

With an attitude like that, id write her a polite email expressing that you do not work for people who can not respect you as a person and pull out, if they are giving you that attitude at the present moment, wait till its finished, guarantee even if you have it in writing, there will always be something wrong with your work, they may even refuse to pay you once its done.

as for the photos, jesus, whats with all the crap on the woman? especially as they are trying to advertise wedding photography. id stay clear and keep your portfolio to a higher standard.

Well i will speak with them tmrw i am only charging £60 for websites anyways so.. well see

SERIOUSLY? Dude, WTF! We charge a minimum of £500 and that's for a 2 page website that Rose barely puts any effort into and I'm not involved in at all. If I get involved with database and backend coding it goes up at least another £500 and then some, if Rose has to actually do design work and stuff it goes up further, if they want more pages, more functionality, it goes up further, etc. etc. etc. Don't short change yourself, you really are good at it!

Eeek sorry - but if you charge too low, it explains the attitude of your problem customer entirely.

I know its difficult when quoting for small companies, but as Alex said, thats WAY too low !

Don't be afraid to ask the sort of money the services deserve, its a specialized skill and it commands a premium. I used to charge £40 per hour for small jobs, and entire site redesigns were package prices, but always £500+ and thats if they provided the textual content, company logo's ..etc Once your talking Functionality and database integration then you can get way into 4 digit figures.

thanks hollowpoint!, i see your point i do charge more for additonal bits and bob like online shops etc but not as much as you!, everyones ive had so far has been great to work with! obviously i do have a main job aswell, just do this as en extra and i enjoy it and take alot of interest and want to work with people, may sound daft but thats me!, as my work build up and maybe do companies etc i would charge more but to help individuals out there starting off thats what i want to do and i also do digital printing all to go with etc, so try to help them all in oe got got a few sites coming up for peeps on here looking forward too aswell, when it builds up i am doing my own website bit by bit but putting others first and would like to create a great portfolio even spread across multiple forums etc but thats all to come in time!.

You're doing a good job mate, just don't spend too long doing the cheap jobs, you're good enough to charge more, so you should. We both have day jobs too, but Rose won't even go out the door for less than £200 a day these days and I work from home for about the same, plus the web jobs on top. We used to be just like you, all for helping out the little guy that's starting out, then things like vistaprint came along and we starting getting treated like shit, as you are being by this woman. Get a few done for a portfolio, then put your prices up and don't be afraid to turn a job down if they're not willing to pay, you'll build yourself a better reputation if you charge more and do a better job than the others out there who don't. Good luck bud ;)

Tbh mate - from doing the same thing myself i tend to just suss when a client is going to be a pain and how much i need that money and move on.

If that's not professional enough for them then say the line "No problem ring around for a few quotes and if you change your mind feel free to come back to me"

Usually they'll ring round and either get quoted stupid prices or an extremely cheap £250 site then when they find out it's crap they'll come running back.

Either way i'd walk away from this one entirely! :headvswal

Most sitebuilders will produce something of higher standard than the type they want mate! I say do the site for them and bank the £60 but leave off your portfolio

fitting bespoke interiors i have to work with customers and emailing, you can tell who the problem customers are, some times you have to work with it but in your case you have the luxury of mainly email, for such a low price you do not have to put up with that kind of behavior considering the great job and work you put in, bear in mind that this is just the construction page she doesn't like!!!! you have a thankless job their mate of creating the website that she OBVIOUSLY will LOVE at the end of it with no hassle what so ever, think to your self if it is a sideline job or if your starting to make a business from it, and decide, their is plenty more jobs out their, even if you let her down by saying im afraid we cant work together (or some gentle form) the damage is kept to a minimum, just because you didn't work with her, she has nothing to damage your reputation! although don't expect and recommendations from her :tt2:
