Nobody on DW can give me an answer to this so I was hoping that someone on here could give me a steer in the right direction

I need to fit a hydraulic handbrake (in addition obviously to the stock handbrake) but was wondering how it plumbs in to the ABS (and indeed if it even can be used with ABS)

This is on a SWB TT which has a very different ABS setup to that of the LWB TT, the unit looks different and there appear to be more lines running in and out (none are marked as to which is which)

are we talking 'T' pieces or does the ABS need to be removed?

any help would be much appreciated

thanks

i would run a T piece straight into the output from the ABS to the wheel although im not sure if the ABS will then kick in to stop you locking up the rears.

Maybe a little trial and error is in order?

I think you may have problems as you essentially have two system that will be working against each other. The handbrake to lock the wheels and the ABS to make sure they don't. I don't know how they will work in tandem, you might be best just removing the ABS and re-pipe the brake lines from a non ABS brake MC to the callipers. Just a thought mate.

Yeah mate, I was really hoping that wouldn't be the case but maybe it's the only option

is it possible to turn off (ie. pull a fuse) to effectively disable the ABS as and when required?

Don't know mate, i think the system is essentially a pump, so pulling a fuse and disabling it may stop your brakes working properly. Saying that it may then just allow the fluid to bypass the ABS actuator completely.

Here's a diagram from the manual showing the brakes lines and ABS, may help you out;

Cheers mate

which model Z32 doesn't have ABS?

and I'm assuming that it's not just as simple as dis-connecting the top row of pipes and connecting them up to the coresponding bottom row of pipes (thereby bypassing the actuator altogether) and plumbing in a 'T' piece for the hydraulic handbrake lines to tap into?

Or wouldnt it just be easier to just remove the abs sensors in the rear diff and front hubs?. 4 screws and cable tie them out the way untill you want abs again if u want abs again that is.

don't see why the 2 wouldn't work in unison

you't won't be footbraking and pulling hydraulic handbrake at the same time, so ABS will have nothing to do.

I had hydro and ABS on my 325 drift car no probs. If you have a single brake line that goes to the rear wheel then T's off to both rears, then simply plumb the handbrake into the IN bit on the stock T piece. Like Jaffa says above ABS has nothing to do with the braking when you're not pressing the brake pedal!

Also I will be doing this job on my SWB at some point plan on doing the same as I did on my beemer. You can see on the diagram Steams provided that there is a single line that supplys both rear wheels via a T piece.

I assume this is the point that you mean mate:

where would the return line going back to the hydro unit tap in?

Tap in and out at the same point. Remove bit from ABS unit to that T piece. Plumb the line from ABS unit to Hydro IN. Then plumb Hydro OUT to the T piece. When ABS is functioning it just works through the hydro as usual. When you pull the hydro it acts directly to the rear wheels.

I'll take a look at that now, that sounds pretty simple?
