I was just wondering, how many engine re-builds the average zed owner has:

(a) carried out by themselves

or

(b) had carried out by a garage/specialist

and what the results were

Featured Replies

Had my car engine rebuilt by jimmer.

Build engines from time to time at work. Not your typical engines though. Conrods the size of me, cylinder heads the size of zed engines and cylinder liners that I can stand inside.

On a zed none,on a calibra lots done a full conversion from a redtop to a v6,full body strip and rebuild and made a convertable rearwheel drive calibra aswell .I have lots of picture's

None, but I have done a transplant. Started first time too, so I was chuffed.lol

Did you carry that out on your own, and how long did it take?

Isn't the V6 Calibra lump only around 160 brake? was there a reason you didn't opt for the turbo lump (CE20LET or whatever it's called)

have you got pics of the conversion, I always liked the Calibra, especially the turbo (204 brake wasn't it)?

Sure did, my engine was smoking and had done 130k miles so I swapped it with the one from my JDM which was a fresh import from Japan with less than 60k on it (the engine that is not the zed).

I really took my time over it both getting the old one out and putting the new one in. Did the cam belt, pcv, temps sensors, bypasses etc and gave it a bit of a touch up before installing it.

Did a lot of cleaning and spraying in the bay before it went in as well. First time I'd done an engine swap but it was fun. lol

So far I've pulled an engine and stripped it, but I'm weighing up whether to re-build it myself or take a recent recomendation on board and get a proven garage to take the re-build on and then maybe re-fit it myself

If your confident in doing the work yourself then go for it. If your having doubts though, I'd get a Pro like Jimmer to do it.

The v6 was supposed to have 167bhp,but what we found was they were all around 180/183,bhp and some were producing 192, and that was a standard engine with no mods, the reason I put the v6 in as it was a good all rounder and mine was fettled a little the best engine in the vauxhall range and the rarest was the 2.6,as it has better tourque ,it even matches the 3.0,v6

the c20let (turbo)has 204bhp as you have said mate I have seen a few giving 350 reliable bhp,but if you go above the 350 mark the start to give you problems.

And i will sort out all the piccies of both conversions, and I will put a thread up about them

The lump in my old Vectra GSi was 192bhp but it had the 3l cams. Was a quick car that just kept pulling, obviously not to zed standards though lol

That thread would be an interesting read mate

Most of the Gsi vectra's have the 2.5 wth 3.0 g cams that is why they have the 192bhp,the 2.6's do away with the egr set up and they only produce 180bhp,but the give a higher torque figure than the Gsi set up, and they pull better than the 2.5 gsi's just a little but they pull away from the 2.5's It is just that the 2.6 is rarer than the 2.5

Yeah, they used the 2.6 lump in the newer GSi's didn't they? Mine was a pre face saloon (best looking one they made. lol)

not needed to one on my zed but i have done a few on suzuki sj's.

sj410 to a sj413.

sj413 to a 1.6 vitara.

another sj413 to a 1.7 isuzu turbo diesel.

Have also done a transit and have done a head gasket on a supra.

Think i need to start buying decent cars!

My 2001 vectra was a face lift sri,2.6 and it was a flyer, but That lasted two month's as i had to get another zed,I missed it,lol

I did my own and was lucky enough to buy a spare engine to work on over the year to tart up and replace all the gaskets and the usual service parts and deleted a load of crap it didnt need. Because i also converted to manual, it took an extra few days for the additional modding, plus i cleaned up the engine bay.

So most of last year/winter was spent tarting/painting and polishing.

I didnt need to rebuild it internally as it came from a known low mileage source, but might have a go on my old engine just for the experience lol.

Ive part rebuilt a few engines from other makes of car so not scared to have a go.

There is always help available here should you get stuck at any point if you were to give it a go yourself.

My DTM Edition Calibra ended up with a X30XE Omega engine, F20 close-ratio box with a wide-ratio 5th gear (out of a F18 Vectra box) for cruising. It was kicking out 199.6bhp and 216lb/ft of torque. Not bad for a 150k ex-police engine!.The 2.6 is a waste of time in my opinion, the one to go for is the later 3.2 but you can get issues with the MAF sensor and coilpacks.

put an xr2 engine in a 1.3 fiesta ghia for a mate 3 weekends ago. A mate of his gave us access to his garage with ramps. It was so much easier than doing it sat on the drive. took just over a day..

Little rocket.... lol.... Got the engine for £70..

I used to work at Perkins Engines in Shrewbury, build 12ltr straight six diesels for ERF and Foden etc and used to build one and a bit engines a day so built a fair few in nearly 10 years I was there.Have rebuilt loads of bike engines as well, including v-4 500cc two stroke RD500lc engines.
