Hey all

does anyone know the exact ruling on sorning your car at the min, im a little confused (not hard) since the recent rule change

i plan to sorn the car in a month or so to address various issues its recently developed, do i have to have it insured/mot'd/taxed whilst on a sorn if its parked on private land?

failing that anyone know a good storage place for cars in the northwest lol?

Use your tax reminder when it comes and declare it off road, do it online.

The sorn lasts a year but you can tax it again anytime after your work is complete.

Mine is sorned, I intend taxing it again on 1st April or May just for 6 months and I will then put it away again :cool3:

Nothing needed.

The new law means if it has tax, it HAS to have insurance.

You can have insurance with no tax tho.

You can keep it my place if you want Chris, I promise I wont pinch any bits off it:angel:

Thanks Guys, it wont be for long but the zed does have a few annoying issues that need sorting out sooner rather than later so i think that's best done where i don't use it every day.

lol mate yep the grey one  will speak to you on this at the meet mate but i think sorning for a while is the best option :/

Remember that since the rule change it's still got to be insured.

Speak to insures and tell it's on SORN and they should drop the charges during that period to something like Fire and theft only

Nope if its off the public road and sorn you will not need insurance

If its on the road and has tax then the car has to have insurance :)

Yup what he said, plus the confusing one, the one that's got everyone confused:

If it's tax'd but off the road, parked up in your garage having repairs that will span for weeks/months/years, whilever that tax disc is valid and no SORN is in place, it MUST be insured. I personally saved some money on the tax by letting it run out, then SORN'ing it for a few months and sticking it in the garage, but kept it insured for several reasons:

1. if my garage burns down the car isn't fully covered on the house insurance

2. if a plane lands on my garage (We live at the end of Doncaster runway, literally) it isn't covered on the house insurance (Although would likely be covered on the airline insurance lol)

3. if some little scrote who saw it one day when the garage was open decided to nick it, it's insured

4. if some gypo who saw it one day when the garage was open and fancied the metal value, it's insured

5. if I cancel my insurance I stop accumulating NCD and when I start it back up I have to pay a new deposit AND more importantly the price of insurance WILL have gone up within that time, so my policy would be more expensive

There are other reasons, but those were the most prominent that made me keep it insured while SORN'd.
