I was lucky when I got my zed as all the pads and discs have been replaced,I would of thought that skimming the discs is a bit hashy bashy,or does it all depend on how badly worn they are?

Most main dealer garages can do it. It's not that pricey you'll prob only need a couple of mil taken off

Not "hashy bashy" at all (whatever that means - unless its a good thing LOL!)

As long as they do not get skimmed below the minimum thickness then they are better than new!! (yup - better LOL!)

as they are being skimmed on the car they will be true to any runout on the hub.

We skim all the time - makes a lovely job :)

Most times you will be taking off less than 1mm unless the discs are really bad!

The brake lathe we have is used by Porsche dealers who actually skim brand new discs to get them perfect on the car!!

The problem is the labour rate to skim them often works out similar to new discs in a dealer LOL! We generally only use this on internal sales jobs

Can i send discs off to be skimed paul??

They need to be done on the car with the lathe we have - some lathes can do the discs off the car I believe. On car is best - as said you are machining the discs to suit any runout on the hub to get the best results possible when you skim them on the car :)

So juddering through the steering wheel under braking can be caused by just a mm difference in disc thickness?

Yep! I had exactly that! It was disc runout, so had the discs skimmed a mil or so when they were on the car and problem solved. Lucky I had the K-Sport 332mm because thy only just fitted on the lathe lol

So what if that had been done. then at a later date you have to take your disc off and say put it back on in the wrong place. would you get vibration??

doubt i could get min skimed then with 358mm :(

Just showing off now aren't we

To be honest - in real world practice its unlikey you would notice anything - in theory its possible if you had runout on the hub.

Its just the optimum way of doing things!

no not at all. just genuinely interested.

got the same size on the back btw :lol:

If you can find somewhere that has an off car lathe then yes - like this:

http://www.boschdiagnostics.com/TESTEQUIPMENT/WHEELSERVICE/BRAKELATHES/Pages/BrakeLathes.aspx

We have one of these which only does on car:

The first link is a Bosch unit so may be worth phoning some Bosch service centres. Find a local one here:

yeah and 8 pots on the front. well you did ask :lol:

Paul they will have naff all like that around here. they will have grinding stones

PMSL - get a wet & dry sanding block out then with a straight edge & do it yourself!!!

Must be somewhere here: http://www.skimmydiscs.co.uk/Find%20a%20lathe2.html

Dont think you will be able to do much yourself without potentially buggering up the brake surface LOL!

So there is. its a mercedes garage in Criccieth. there is a closer one called hardys but he is a :xxx:

Its only a very fine line around the edge. I might take a grinder to it and just tickkel it with a sanding pad. will only take a few secs. It has nothing to do with the contact serface?

ive done this on many many discs (although not the zed though) flappy pad or wire brush on the grinder and off with the lip! never had any grief.

might be someone who can tell me if this is wrong?

Cool I wouldnt of thought it would of made any differance. its not doing anything lol!!

Just sounds cowboy :cowboy:

the way i saw it, the lip is off the contact area, so getting rid (even sometimes to a VERY slight taper to aid in new pad fitting) wouldn't make any difference. as i said, someone will probably tell me differently lol
