what's the highest boost I can run at?

My motor is now nearly ready from falcon at last, i have had stage 1 turbos from smithy installed (boost range 9-20 psi) in addition to new head gaaskets etc. I hear horror stories about too much boost blowing engines.

I have a mongoose exhaust, air intake, and will be installing a JWT chip and blitz boost controller. Whats the max boost you guys think i can run at safely, without damaging the engine? my car is UK 92 manual.

cheers

if your running stock injectors then id say no more than 14psi to be safe really.

what you need to do is get it set up on a rolling road.

I agree with Warren, no more than 14psi as the stock injectors cannot supply enough fuel for any more than that.

You should notice that with upgraded turbos the car will be producing a lot more power at that boost pressure than if you ran stock turbos at that pressure.

cheers guys, i never thought that i would have got more power out of the turbos when running at a the same boost though....bonus. i just thought the stage 1's could take me to higher boost.

if they are stage 1 or whatever that means then they are stock blowers with 360degree thrust bearings, this is not a performance enhancment, more like a reliablity thing.

ste you have the same as me!

dont go past 14 psi or u will end up in a hire car for another 6 weeks

STE,CALL ME ON MY MOBILE WHEN YA GO FOR YA CAR!

warren are u sure about takin his car to a rollin road(bad idea(recent post)

Safety Boost mate smile.gif LOL

You can drive for ever on 5 psi biggrin.gif

I only use the brakes so I can accelerate all over again.

Steve, take my recent engine blow as an example! My mistake was running the boost too high and not having access to a competent engine tuner. Not that I think there is one anywhere in the UK anyway!

Also I should have upgraded the intercoolers too. Lessons learned too late for me. Be really careful and take the most conservative route on raising your boost.

My 2p worth is now:

- std turbos, air intake, exhaust, evc and remapped ECU = 13psi/0.9bar max.

- as above with new turbos but std injectors and intercoolers = 14psi/0.95bar max.

- as above but with larger intercoolers and 555 injectors = 17psi/1.15bar max.

Hope that yours doesn't blow like mine did!

New Turbos/Injectors/ECU in January 2002.

New Engine/Turbos/Intercoolers in July 2002.

Good Luck!

i have been speaking to steve at falcon engineering (middlesbrough). this guy knows this stuff no doubt, he owned a zed for 6 years as well. he says that running 14psi on standard engine is too much. He talks about overheating problems and cracks emerging in the pistons. If the car is driven hard too long then bang!. he has advised me to stay away from boosts that high, unless i can afford to have another rebuild. Its ok to have high boost as long as you dont use it too often was the take home message, but if you want to boot it a lot then stay within stock boost cos thats what the car was designed to do fro everyday use....this has bummed me out a bit as i have just bought a boost controller and JWT chip!!! oh well will try a lower boost setting of 12 psi maybe. Anyway hope you get things sorted out john.

cheers

i thought stock boost was 14psi these days redface.gif

Anyway your man in boro is correct in that running 14psi on stock fuel is TOO MUCH - GET It PEOPLE YOUR GONNA BLOW YOUR ENGINES !!!!

Overheating is exactly what happens - nothing kills a engine like throwing hot air into it !!

What does Extra Fuel do - Reduces the cylinder temps = Less Heat = Less chance of Cracking your crowns and breaking your bank account ! Joy of joys.

Moral of story

14Psi + intake + Pipes + Correctly MAP ECU (JWT for example) = GOOD

14PSI + Stock = BOOOM frown.gif

Oh yeah and a boost controller is safer than boost jets as it better eliminates Spikes biggrin.gif

God is coming ...and he dont have stock turbos . . .

so let me get this right, its ok to run 14psi when you have mongoose exhaust, modified air intake, JWT chip and boost controller? So how does this keep the heat problem at bay then? just trying to get my head round this...cheers

STEVE

with an ecu you get far more fuel into the system. Therefore you can run around at that boost as it is apparently stock boost according to many people on here.

When you run a rich fuel air mix, the combustion temperature is lower. Less heat is generated, so less heat has to be taken away from oil, water and compressed air (intercoolers).

OK so i get it, the extra fuel keeps the temps down. Also then i gather STOCK INTERNALS WILL HANDLE 14 PSI BOOST? i just dont want to blow my engine having it just rebuilt by Falcon (which are VERY GOOD).

cheers for your comments guys.

sos lads, lasses but this is bollocks!!!! the prob with high boost standard chip is after 11or 12 psi the chip has no information to understand what the engine want in terms of fuel ingition or cam timing so it runs weak and detonates=BOOM!!!but just before this the cylinder temp rises like f**k which is really what kills the engine!!what a modded chip does(except superchips)is alter the parameters of the chip to allow for higher boost by keeping injectors open for longer(or fit a fuel pressure regulator to raise fuel pressure they are very similar in outcome) retard the ignition to prevent detonation and alter cam timing a top end to limit the amount of air(once the detonation sensor..err.senses detanation)so this is why boost controlers work as at middle rpm the engine can tollerate more boost than flat out running so just out of curiousaty have you heard of water injection look into it!!but answer your question 12.5 to 13psi with timing retarded a little running super unleaded 98octaine P.S the workshop man says 11.5psi to 13psi on manual T25/28 just out of interest?so make of this what ya want just dont trust incar gauge it's not very accurate!!
