I'll give that a read when I've finished aggressor mate :thumbup1: I've got a kindle so I just download them.

Have you read "First into Action"? It's one of the very few books about the SBS and it's a superb read.

Yes mate, I read that a fair few years back now, that's the one by the author who went on Shakey selection straight after passing out of Lympstone isn't it?

Quite a good book if I remember correctly

That's the one mate. I've only just started reading them in the past year or so (since I bought my kindle) So far I've read, not in any order;

Main Battle Tank

First into Action

Trigger Time

Bullet Magnet

Fire Strike 7/9

Hellfire

Apache

Sniper One

Warrior Soul (US SEAL book, not that good)

The Regiment

SAS Opertaion Storm

Vulcan 607

And all the McNab books novels and true

Have you got any more suggestions mate?

There were quite a few written about the whole B20 shenanigans', I'd avoid the one by Michael Asher (the TA guy) 'The real B20', although I would suggest that what he has written is closer to the reality of what actually took place, but the guy is a plank!

The other B20 type book was written by the Kiwi guy (can't remember his name) it's called 'Soldier Five', he tries to put the record straight with regards to Vince P getting slated in 'The one that got away'

I've never met the guy but the Kiwi community is pretty tight in the military and he's apparently a good bloke so worth a read if you've already read B20 and The one that got away

A more recent book is Task Force Black by Mark Urban, again an interesting read with near current input so in my opinion, it over steps the mark in a number of areas...though MoD did authorise its release?

or if you want a bit of humerous reading (just look at the pictures), I'll lend you a copy of 'Squaddie' by Steve Mcglaughlin. He was one of my riflemen years ago in Iraq and NI. I actually get a few mentions in the book.

I've got shelves full of 'em mate so any time you want to borrow any, give me a shout

My mum is a huge pratchett fan. Met him loads of times, was almost in one of his films. She has evey book he has done. Most of them are signed 1st editions, She also has loads of his figures about 300+ and collects all the stamps lol!!!

Could be worth keeping hold of, you never know.

Aren't signed 1st editions of JK Rowlings books worth quite a bit now?

will be soon lol!!! I know one or 2 of them went on ebay £400 odd quid and one of the stamps went for £1300+, for a stamp :lol:

What, a Pratchet stamp or Rowling stamp?

If your interested in war books I can't recommend with the old breed by Eugene sledge, and helmet for my pillow enought. World war two memoirs

Prachet one. Most the books are hardbacks. Also most of the figures that she has from discworld are signed by Bernard Pearson.

I've just quickly googled them and they look pretty interesting, apart from Band of Brothers, Pegasus Bridge and Paddy Mayne, I haven't really read many WWII books so might give these a go

Thanks for that mate. I've read B20 and tbh it's the only account I've read of that ill-fated mission, so I will defintely read the ones you've suggested. It would be good to get other views of what actually happened.

I've added Squaddie and Task Force Black to my wish list in the kindle store, Soldier 5 isn't on kindle at the moment :( but I've requested it so hopefully it'll be added soon.

Thanks again for the suggestions you've given, will keep me busy for a while.

I'll read Squaddie first and look out for you mate, love the humour of the services, can't beat it. :thumbup1:

I'll give them a read mate, cheers. I've read quite a few WWII memoirs and missions etc but the ones I've read have mainly been RAF, RN and commando/SAS ones.

Squaddie is definately worth a read but I'll warn you now bud, although Steve Mac was a genuinely nice guy, he was a bit of a strange fish and was basically a civillian in green (or desert) kit, who joined the Army in memory of his brother (formerly 2RGJ). He kept a diary of every single day that he served and this is where the book comes from

It's not gritty in the sense of a lot of the more recent (and justified) Afghan accounts but it's worth reading for the poetic licence alone

To be fair he'd make a brew in the naffi sound like a firefight in Sangin

If you want gritty then there are plenty of Afghan books out there now, 'Man Down' by Mark Ormrod is a real rollercoaster of emotion.

If I remember correctly the other two that I read a few years back now were '3 Para' and '3 Commando Brigade'; 3 Cdo Bde is again quite emotional

I've literally just started reading 'Dead Men Risen' an account of the Welsh Guards on tour.

and definately one for your list, which is a bit older, is 'No Mean Soldier' by Peter Mcaleese

with the old breed is very good as its a personal account of the war, same with helmet for my pillow, the series Pacific was based on the books, but misses out a few things.

The thing about "with the old breed" that makes it so good, is hes basically talking to you about it, as you can tell hes not a professional writer it makes it all the more poignant.

they are available in audio book, but i found i couldn't concentrate for long enough to listen to them lol. so got them in paper back instead. much easier to read it.

I've still got to get around to watching The Pacific DVD box set, I bought it early last year and have never gotten around to watching it

  • Internal Combustion Engine Fundamentals - John.B. Heywood
  • Shigleys Mechanical Engineering Design - 9th edition
  • Advanced Engineering Mathematics - K.A.Stroud
  • Tune To Win - The Art and Science of Race Car Development and Tuning - Carrol Smith

If anyone has already read them, please don't spoil it by telling me how they end.

Same ^^^ Its supposed to be really good! Be hard to beat 'Band Of Brothers' which I though was brilliant.

Pretty much impossible to beat 'Band of Brothers' I reckon

loads of Brit actors and extras in it as well (and Saving private Ryan), which is nice to see, shame they're all playing Americans though

there are a couple of ex squaddies in it with speaking parts, I knew two of them, the McS**en brothers (both ex 1RGJ)

If I remember correctly Rory got a nice little scene as the Easy Company radio op who tries calling in mortar fire against a load of German tanks :tank:

but it turned out that his American accent "All Easy stations, all Easy stations!" was so crap that they dubbed him out and used an American voice over instead!

If the Pacific is half as good, it'll be epic

I'm nearly at the end of a Dean koontz one, but I've just realised I've read it before so I know how it finishes. Doh!! My brothers partner got me a book called ' how to be a woman' for Xmas!! It actually looks like it might be a good read but I think somebody might be heading for a slap!!

My own personal opinion having both band of brothers and pacific on Blue ray, although pacific get a bit boring in the middle, its one hell of a watch. id say its actually slightly better than band of brothers. shame no ones done a UK version of any of the war stuff. would love to see it.
