right in the process of removing my engine it says here

http://diy.icydesigns.com/article/170/Nissan/300ZX/Z32_(1990-96)/Engine/Engine:_Removal/

that you need a 3ft extension to remove the gearbox is that for the bolts round the top of the gearbox as if it is there not there as some :cowboy: who changed the clutch and didnt put them back :scared: tis car does nearl 200mph with missing bolts

Oh dear, if there not fitted, you won't need the extension bar for the removal.

^^^^^^^^

didnt think i would lol when i refit new bolts will go in

when putting the gearbox on, easiest way to reach the bolts with the extension is, bolt the lower bolts on and do up tight to pull the gearbox towards the engine, then let the gear box pull the engine back, just make sure you do not crush any of the pipe work at the back of the engine against the firewall (just make sure its all clear) the lean on the gearbox, will give you better room to get to the 4 top bolts.

Oooh and what you want is 3 x 3inch extensions + 1 x 10inch (or 2x10 inch) 1/2" socket. but with the 3 x 3 inch, you will get some bend at the joints that makes it easier to get the bolts in / out.

Where did you get that link from, its a bit long winded.Sounds like it was written by Haynes. There is no need whatsoever to remove the box when pulling an engine.AS long as the front crossmember is lowered the engine comes out fine.

some say you can leave the box in others say take it out im confused havnt removed box yet what should ido

Having done many 300zx engine removals, not thousands but more than 30 id always LEAVE the box in.I know Jeff at Zedworld leaves them in also, taking the box out is needless, more mess and more work and makes none of the job any easier.Especially if your working on the floor.Anybody that says it is is clearly insane and needs sectioning forthwith .

Just take the whole lot out together gearbox+engine a lot quicker

You sir are clearely insane .I just dont see how it is,having done both ways id say box in is much less aggro. No fluids to drain,no exhaust to drop,no prop to deal with and no huge lump hanging off the end of your engine crane. And you have to split the box anyway if your changing the engine, and refitting the box on the floor aint that great either,in the cars not fantastic granted but i can do them on my own in the car whereas trying to lift and fit a box back onto an engine is a pain in my opinion on your own.

do i have to lift the front of the car to get it out and leave the gearbox in or just drop the subframe to the floor to get clearance its a twin turbo

Raise the car on stands, remove all the lower bell housing bolts.support the crossmember.Undo its fixings and the column pinch bolt(not the rack end).lower the engine a few inches and get down behind the engine and undo the top four bellhousing bolts and the earth lead, also the main live that runs to the starter will need releasing from a bracket at the rear of the engine.once shes all undone, support the box and remove the engine simples.

and should the car be flat on the floor or raised on stands when i pull the engine

just strop the plenum in the middle, once the coil packs are out its easy, the car will need raising on axle stands,oh and by the way, this advice is free at the moment, get your wallet out and subscribe as i think you have had yer moneys worth :whistling:.Joking aside get subscribing chap.

each to there own its the way i do it.

Mikey Bean also leaves the box in the car unless the box actually needs to come out. I've done two engine removals with him now and tbh I can see it's a lot easier without the box attached, as Jimmer says, leaving the box on the engine just makes the whole thing a nightmare, especially when after the engine is out, the box can just be lowered from it's mounts and slid out the side under the car on axle stands.

As for fitting the box on your own, Mikey did do such a crazy thing when he did the manual conversion on the Yellow Z, I wouldn't fancy doing that, lol.

Its because im hard. Haha.

If you say so Mike, if you say so ;)

I would like to see any of you put a box on a z whilst on axle stands on your own;)

not that hard as long as you have 2 trolly jacks some board and the alloy jack from the boot. (if its auto)

If its a manual, just slide under the box, pull it up on to your belly and then lift, once its on the clutch, you can crawl out from under the box and use a trolley jack.

Id like to see you try and lift a 75 kg sach twin plate clutch into a Renault kerax or Magnum.Thats nearly 12 stone which is probaly more that you way i bet Mikey as you are a bit of a racing snake. And you cant lay on your back and use yer knees like a zed box either.

I would like to see any of you put a box on a z whilst on axle stands on your own;)

You should have come and watched me do mine mate. :tt2:

I've done it 4 or 5 times, both auto and manual, had the box out from the car and then back under each time, and I'm as skinny as a rake, but I AM hard, hahaha...... (nearly killed my self each time tho, but got the job done, grrrrrrr, well 'ard)
