Hi there ive been trying to narrow down an extremely annoying rattle it turns out it is my front left Coily... I believe it is the actual strut moving asthough the top nut is not quite nipped up... So i tightened it up as best as i could as there is no flat spot and it still rattles??

Hmm stange for anything there to rattle... are your springs captive with the car jacked up or is the thing just sitting low as hell with no keeping springs?

Are you sure its not the camber arms bushings? they are the usual suspect.

hmmm the actual nut that holds the top plate onto the shock itself, you should be able to lean on it pretty solid, if yo uare going to take shock apart get that top nut loose before you take the shock out to make your life easy... and DO NOT remove the top plate until you have taken the load off the spring.

Yeah i know mate lol... ive seen that happen before.... Will standard top mounts fit them do you think? Think there is defo something not right with it?

theres two types of tein shocks one with rubber top mounts and other with a pillow ball bearing mount ..

if its a rubber top mount not sure

yeah its the pillow ball type mate... i do believe it is the bearing... been doing a bit of google searching on the subject... apparently its as common as muck.... Im thinking of changin them to oem.... will have to check the o/d of the spring to make sure it sits correct in the seat....

Well sorted the rattle..... not for the faint hearted but easily do-able... Ok so what is did was took my coily apart,,, Took the pillowball mounts apart to unleash the main bearing and i could feel the movement in it... Unbelievable that such a tiny bit of movement can create such a noise.... Anyway, i used a angle grinder and removed both prtruding parts of the moving part of the bearing used a suitable washer for each end.. (dead on fit in the top and bottom plate and bolted all back to gether... still have the same rotation movement in the bearing only it does not have any weight on it... Its actually a great mod for these as i hear they are very common problems... gonna go round and do the rest i think....

had the same problem on my s14a ... quite a common prob .. a lot of people messed about with them with diff mods ... some ended up with the ball failing .. i left mine as it was .. 50k later .. still handled like it was on rails

Oh yeah it wouldnt brake apart and all that the play is so little its unreal mate... Mark... when i do the next one i will take some step by step photos... I think its a great litlle mod.. lol but then i did do it i suppose....

Got another little project im working on tho with a photo... i have some spacers in which had no center bore... so the wheels were just hanging on by the nuts.... i managed to get some exhaust made up in precisely the right sizes of 1 the spacer then another piece in that to fit the wheel.... had to cut and gring a fair bit but the front 2 are done....

Funny that, I was always like that until I bought a Z, now I never seem to have enough nuts/bolts/screws left to put it back together, because someone at some point in it's history has lost some or had them left over at the end ;)
